I picked up this swapped RS from a user that had it for sale on here a month or so ago. Just looking to show the progress! It needed/needs a decent amount of work, its rusty (which is a shame) but its a fun little car besides! Here is how I bought it, sitting outside since 2013 Lots of parts extra parts, not running, and rusty... Very moldy interior Bought it being told it was not getting fuel, so i did some digging. I replaced the whole fuel pump assembly, but still could not get it to fire, I found a few more possible issues, and corrected them, one of which was the ej20g ignitor bypass (needed to be done to run GD coilpacks) In the process of trying to get it started, it started to leak oil, from the turbo feed line. Because it had a steel washer instead of a copper one. After that I redid the timing and it coughed into life.
Adjusted the IACV and got it to idle on its own, but it still misfired, Discovered the passenger side coilpack plugs were backwards, then it ran great!
The stock STI ej20g would have come with a TD05h turbo with a 90 degree inlet, the car came with it, but it had seen better days, installed on the car was a WRX tdo4, which seemed to have bad seals, or shot oil out of it from sitting. Regardless I had a VF28 on the shelf, so I installed that, and put the downpipe back on. Next step was to get the ancient nasty gas out of the rusty rusty tank, ever seen green 91/93 before? Yes it did go in my mouth.
The previous owner had a the original 4.11 transmission grenade, He replaced it with a JDM 4.44 trans but did not change the stock rear diff, The JDM engine/trans originally installed was a 4.11 to match the rear diff. So I needed to put a 4.44 rear diff into it, It had a rare oem rear diff skid plate!
With that all done I removed the interior including most of the mouse nests and droppings, so I would not get sick. Had an okay set of sparco seats sitting around, so I installed those as well.
After that, the car needed a trunk lid, old dented one would not latch. I had an "okay" one laying around so I installed that as well
With that all done, and an oem fuel pump, and filter installed, I let it idle outside to filter out the rest of the nasty green gas out.
Took her for a drive after that, Found out that the brake booster vacuum line was backwards, fixed that and had brakes again.
I picked up a v1-4 front bumper and JDM lightweight beam to save some wieght. Rusty rusty car two of the 4 bumper beam bolts snapped.
Rear wheels had aftermarket camber bolts, after a drive down the road after I put on the "loud exhaust" (stock STI catback installed on the car when i bought it, but it came with a 3inch catback with can that was on it back in 2009) I was able to hear something rubbing in the rear, Drivers side rear camber bolt was loose, and had tons of negative camber, odd with stock wrx struts, replaced it with a stock strut bolt and we were good to go.
Got it all registered and drove it to work for 2 days, on my way home it was angry like it was not getting fuel, and the walbro 255 I installed was very very loud. One rusty fuel tank...
Putting in a stock fuel pump to get the FULL tank of 93 I just put in, out. then to clean the tank. That is a current update of the progress of this car. 1/14/20
Dayum Doc, that is quite the surgery you performed to bring it to life. And I thought that my RS had rust Excellent work and perseverance!
Changed the oil, and it looked a little spicy, Going to change it again soon after putting about 150 miles on it. She has not clacked yet so we shall see.
Bringing another classic back to life! Sure, she might be a little crusty and rough around the edges, but they all deserve a second lease on life, if even there's only a glimmer of hope - especially coupes, but I might be a bit biased. Also, maybe it's just me (it's probably just me), but no sound on the videos?
If there's enough metal to weld against, these guys have some of the sheet metal you'll need https://www.subiesavers.com/impreza
Put the turn signals in, new used stock fuel pump. Just need to be kind to it for a while to get this full tank of gas out in order to properly clean the tank before another walbro. Still runs good!
