I have a 1998 Legacy GT auto... I want a manual really bad, what would be the cheapest engine and tranny to swap in thats faster than the N/A EJ25 probably a 02-05 wrx swap? Is there any place around here that does swaps for cheap? lol or a decent price I guess not $10,000 It was like 3 grand to put a new EJ25 and auto tranny in when mine blew i wish i would of know more about my car back then.
the cheapest would be if you're dead set on a swap- just swapping auto to manual without changing the motor. now once you start looking at the newer 02+ the price tag is going to go way up, since the cheapest wrx motor i've seen was 1k. then you add the labor of someone doing the work, and i don't even know what that would cost, my wallet hurts just thinking about it. but there is probably someone on here that would be able to do the swap, but you are really going to have to do your homework on whats all involved, then check the price vs just buying a used wrx in the first place, then selling your car and not even worrying about the hassle of a swap.
Or you could buy a salvage or wreck wrx and swap since you have the whole car. Its hard find a complete running salvage wrx locally though. You are better off buying a used wrx since they are cheaper these days.
a swap can be done for cheap.....but if you're asking, it's over your head (sorry, but it's true. piecing together a swap from numerous sources and doing the labor yourself takes a TON of research, and a lot of patience in buying the parts). yea, you could probably grab a wrecked parts car for a few grand, but again, you'd be looking at a lot of labor to swap it over..... all said and done, I don't think $10k is out of the realm of possibility. and for that, you could buy a working WRX.
Well I sorta like my car I mean every one knows what a wrx is, but the phase I and II EJ25's are really hard to mod you don't just slap on an exhaust and re-flash the ecu and get 40 more hp you cant even re-flash the ecu. I'm sick of upgrading my cars handling I want more power. What about a jdm turbo engine I know for the Twin turbos need to be converted to single but is there any older jdm single turbo or the old legacy SS turbo engine? Nothing subaru made in the us from the 90's to 2002 was fast. Think i could pick up a low milage 02 or 03 wrx engine tranny and rear diff for around 1k? Its either a swap or cams and a complete rebuild.
The Legacy Turbo (91-94) made right around 180hp which is a whopping 10 more than your EJ25. There is also very little head room (hp-wise) on that motor due to the head design. You could use the bottom end and put on some better heads (like your EJ25 heads for instance) and put down some nice numbers but that would involve more know how than just doing a straight up swap. The issue with the JDM swaps is that they can be very difficult to find parts for and also tuning. IIRC they are tuned to run on 96octane in Japan so some tuning would be required and it most likely wont happen with any of the cheap methods available for the newer USDM WRXs. You can do a 2.0L swap for pretty cheap now-a-days. I was able to get mine on the road for under 3, but I did all the work (with help from friends) except the wiring which I had Chux do for me. I also got some killer deals on parts and have decent knowledge of everything Subaru. Buying a parts car is a great place to start since you have all of the parts you will need on hand and can sell the extra bits for $$, but you need to get a crashed car than which can go from 1.5k-5k for a WRX. Keep in mind you can go out and buy a 02 WRX with higher miles for in the 6k range (not that this is the best answer, as there is alot to be said to sticking with the older body styles). If you bring the car to a reputable shop it should be fairly simple to get it all done for under $10k. Check out GT and ECS ( http://garagetuning.com/Swap Pricing.htm http://www.eastcoastswappers.com/rates.php ) for more info.
How much was it to have someone due the wiring for you? I know about ECS but the east coast is a little to far away and they charge a lot, they do stuff right but id like to do this for less than I could but a nice wrx for. And garage tuning is in cali.
Most wiring harness merged these days they charge around $600. Look around for a wreck legacy gt 5spd from your model and swap the transmission and the necessary parts to convert your auto. For the engine save some money for the wrx engine, whole car wiring harness, Ecu, fuel pump controller, x-member, front Turbo sway bar, power steering unit and Turbo back exhaust system. I might have forgotten some other little things. It could cost you right around $2,500-$4,500 depending on how complete the swap is. Do some research and you can decide.
^thanks a full merge starts at $500. That is using the WRX engine/ECU, and legacy dash/gauges. www.numbchuxconversions.com like I said, unless you really have a good handle one what you're doing, you're going to have a hard time putting together a reliable swap for much less than a running car. Dynapar pretty much walked the line of saving as much money as you possibly could, and that was many years in the researching. and picking up some awesome deals on parts. piecing together a swap from a few different cars is very difficult, and requires a lot of knowhow and labor since you don't know the history of the parts, or compatibility. And to answer your previous question. HELL NO, you will definitely not get an engine, transmission and rear diff in usable condition for a grand total. that would be a deal for rebuildable parts!! A grand is pretty much the bottom of the barrel for run-able WRX engines. but you still have a lot of parts you'd need to find from there just to complete the engine swap.
Well at first I was set to boost my car 5-6psi; WRX headers, TD04, intercooler (take out my hood scoop insert so it actually works), aftermarket up pipe down pipe ect, but my engines old and I'm pretty sure a wrx/turbo swap will be more reliable with better gas milage and even more power potential if I wanted. Also if i was going to swap, to save time and headaches id probably just look for a full wrx drive train all together.
well you can do that on the cheap, i got all that aside from the wrx headers for around 300 bucks. Now once you go aftermarket you spend a little more, but you can always boost it til she blows, and reuse all the parts you picked up since they work on either platform. but like you said its probably easier to do it all one time, and only one time.
I'm thinking il just do a 5 Speed swap and turbo my car. With the 5 Speed swap alone I should gain 10 whp and lose about 50 pounds. I'v also heard turboing the EJ25 can be more reliable with EJ22T internals, but idk what I would use for an ECU. For a 5 Speed how much wiring is needed and what else is needed besides Tranny, Clutch, Flywheel? Id like to get a mechanical rear diff but that probably wont happen.
If you're lookin to swap to a 5 speed instead of an auto then I can help you out. I gunna pick up a 98 legacy outback this weekend and I pretty much just want the motor. Hit me up if you're intersted in the whole 5 speed swap. It'll sell for cheap.
