I'm a bit confused. Been doing some research on my motor over on 2.5RS. Many people talk about boosting the EJ22E block. Mine is stamped with EJ222. Is it the same or is it a different block?

I have a turbo'd EJ22E in my 98 OBS and it is quicker than my WRX. Something about a 9.7:1 CR and 10 psi that has that effect. I have a great willingness to part with the turbo kit since it does not fit into my future plans with the car. I'll be selling everything... 2.5" NA single port UEL header (not Borla; mild steel and won't crack) custom up pipe turbo intercooler JDM 460cc injectors converted fuel rails JDM WRX ECU w/adapter harness EGT probe all hoses and oil feed/return lines I still have a little tweaking to do before I actually sell it but within the next 2 months or less it will be sold. I need to see if I can get it to talk to an OBDII reader for ease of use for the future owner. PM me if interested and I'll give you first dibs. I'll even deliver it to the cities from Duluth/Superior.
If your 2.2l is NA its a EJ22E. There are phase 1 and phase 2 EJ22Es depending on when it was made. The main difference is the compression ratio. up through 96 had 9.5:1, 97-98 had 9.7:1 and 99-01 had 10:1. The 96-98 are all the same internals and such they just ran a thinner 3 layer head gasket which raised the CR. It is also important to note that when they made this change (97+) the motors became interference. I have boosted my EJ22E twice, both were fantastic learning experiences. However this all boils down to the same argument.... boost the NA motor or just swap in a turbo motor. There is something to be said about doing a DIY turbo setup on the NA motor however for dollars spent, HPs gained, future potential, and simplicity you are better off going with swap.
mine is a 2000 2.2l. I don't want to swap a turbo motor in the car, it's not worth it and I'm only driving this car until I decide what next year will bring me with the rally venture. If/when I turbo this car it will be this fall/winter and I want to custom build it myself yeah, I've been poking at him for information. Although I've been starting to read a lot on 25rs.com as well.
have you thought about using a ej25 shortblock under the ej22 heads? put some delta torque grind cams in there and you will be making a bit more power than a stock ej25.
lol..moar money than I want to spend on this car..unless i could find a block at a junk yard. but again, would have to pay to have the cams done...so that route is out. if I wanted to drop real money on the car I'd source a 2.5 turbo block, throw pistons in it, and throw a 6 speed in there....

The DIY cheap turbo kit is its own beast. I found that a VF-11 w/ a MBC will create plenty of oomph on the 2.2l. In fact I have a VF-11 and MBC that I used before, that I no longer need. Wastegate is set to ~4.5lbs or so, which is great for the higher compression. The way that I mounted everything up is to get all of your exhuast stuff (minus the up pipe) mount the turbo and IC (if you want to run an IC) and then make your uppipe to fit. I have an uppipe that was made this way and it works pretty good, if you want to give it a try, only thing that might be an issue is axle boot clearance. Here is a rough idea of what the uppipe will look like.
^I still say the axle-clearance issue was a result of a slightly different header. I bet with a stock header, it would work fine. regardless of the trans. dave. where are you finding "EJ222" stamped? IIRC, the only place "22e" is stamped on the car is the strut tower plate, and your car was original a 2.5 (right?), so it would say something else.
Nope, car is a 2.2L...it just has 2.5 body parts all over it. The block is stamped EJ222 if you look from the front of the motor and look between the PS res. and the Alt. and it's back about 4 inches or so....(I'm shooting from memory here as I'm at work). I'll snap a pic when I get home.
let me ask another question. This car originally came from the jersey coast (salt water) and the manifold studs & bolts are toast...meaning totally coroded. I can't tell the bolt from the stud...it's that bad..... What's the easiest way to replace them without damaging the cylinder heads?
Hope all the studs come out with the nuts when you take them off? Haha Otherwise double nut them and turn them out, if that fails vice grips should do it. When i did my head gaskets on my 2.5 DOHC's i replaced all the manifold studs, got them from the dealer. On one of them the threads in the head came out with the stud. I ended up putting in a helicoil and have had 0 problems. All the codes ive seen under the alternator have just been EJXX, never seen a third digit *shrugs*
If you want to meet up I can show you all the extra turbo kit parts I have laying around (I have quite a few). just let me know. as for the studs, If they are that correded they might come out with the nuts. I would make sure to get the motor nice and hot before trying to pull them to loosen the heads grip on the studs, might help them come as a whole unit. otherwise you could just weld/tack a nut onto them and then they should come right out. As for your EJ222, that is a mystery to me. the only other thing I could think of that has #s on it is the flat spot where the block halves meet and it tells you what size pistons you have in there (As or Bs). either way it is kind of besides the point, since its a EJ22e you will be set to go w/ about 6lbs of boost ;-). you could always drop in a set of the early phase 1 head gaskets to lower your compression a bit (and possibly make it a non interference motor). not necessary just an option.
hehe, that makes more sense huh, I thought it was an RS that had been swapped to a 2.2. my bad. then check the vin plate on the strut tower. that's where the "e" comes from. and yea, get the motor hot, then the studs should come out with the nuts. then replace them. that's your best bet.
