05 STI/Braille lightweight all-season 14 lb. battery/ Cobb downpipe / cobb catback exhaust / AP So I installed Hella supertones a few weeks ago and all was fine. One day my car wouldn't start a few days after the install. Figured it had to do with the install and I tightened the positive connection and it was fine. It happened again last night so I rewired the connection but I accidently put one of the cords in the wrong relay and blew the fuse. So my horn/emergency lights were not working. I went to eat in uptown tonight and I go to start my car and the engine light is on(It wasn't before I parked it). I kind of panic and go to back up and the car and it doesn't go past 2 rpms and won't go faster then 5 mph. So I go over and just shake the battery cord a little and try to rev the engine and it runs fine. I end up deciding to drive home and I hear a little put put noise coming out of my exhaust off and on for like 30 seconds after about 5 minutes of driving it. It goes away after that and doesn't come back. Any Idea's why it would come on? super depressing
If you disconnected the ground strap on the drivers side fender (next to the battery) make sure to reconnect it tightly! Other than that, make sure your battery cables are clean and tight.
I took everything that had to do with the Supertones off. Cleaned the connections and tightened everything and it seems to be running fine now. Hopefully hook up supertones again sunday and have them working. Thanks guys.
IMO, leave the supertones off. They sound like crap, and we have had several cars come into the shop with problems after installing them. On a lot of Subarus, the horn wiring is tied into the ignition wiring, not sure why Subaru does this, but they do.
First person I've ever heard say that. Out of everything I've done to my car it's by far the most rewarding mod to date. I use the horn daily and it brings a smile to my face every time. If you wire it correctly with it's own power source and the included relay (like the directions show) there shouldn't ever be an issue no matter what it's tied to.
Try telling people that have tied stuff into the BIU, that it won't ever hurt anything on your car. Certain systems run on through a driver/controller and can only handle the amount of current demanded by what they control. NO MORE, or the driver/controller may (probably will) fail. It doesn't matter if it's just a relay that you power up, any more load can take the driver out.
Where does that come in to play for the horn? The Hellas feed off the fused horn wire. You may have taken my statement out of context. I was speaking on the topic at hand, horns (not the entire car).
I'm interested in this convo, please continue..... My relay is powered from the battery and i tapped the horn signal in the supertone relay. A few ground connections and whalla.
