I was wondering if anyone had any advice on aftermarket exhaust systems for an 06 WRX. i'm looking for a 3" turbo/cat back exhaust that has a nice deep tone but not obnoxiously loud. any ideas? thanks

Well, there are a ton of exhaust options out there. I've got a TXS stealthback (catted) and a Maddad whisper axleback. This is probably one of the most quiet exhausts out there, but it really opens up when you get in the throttle.

Really, the axle/catback makes the most difference in terms of exhaust note. Other more subdued options out there are the Prodrive exhaust, and the SPT.

My advice is to show up to Firestone Friday night, Calhoun Tuesday night, this Saturday's rallyx in Shakopee, etc...

Listen to some different exhausts, maybe get a ride along, and go from there.

You're gonna have a hell of a time choosing based on opinions. What sounds good to one person probably sounds like ass to the next guy.

I personally like the STi Genome axle back but those are expensive and hard to come by.

I agree with Idget that your best bet would be to go to a Firestone / any other Subaru meet and listen around and ask questions. I am sure you could find something that suits your taste by just attending Firestone on a busy night or the LAX cruise.

+1 for Maddad. I have a full TBE. Really mellow until you open it up. Happy to let you hear it. Lot's of options out there, but this one is on the quite end.

I have a catless Perrin down pipe with a Maddad mid and a Genome axle back. It is pretty loud when you step on it but when on the free way you can hardly hear it.

Most people who have them are going to give you their (biased) positive opinion.

My opinion is that it sounds excellent on a 2.0L but it sounds like ass on a 2.5L once you start moving more air. Sounds alright on a stage 2ish 2.5L tho.

Unfortunately Youtube vids and e-opinions won't tell you a whole lot. I went through a prodrive oval tip, spt, cobb, maddad whisper 2.5", jdm genome, gutted stock, P&L race. Each with all sorts of different header/cat/midpipe (resonator) configurations. The only one's I loved were the genome and P&L. If the genome were 3" or the P&L had a smaller tip, both would be perfect imho.

My opinion is that it is overpriced rebranded Stromung parts. Go get a Stromung exhaust. They will sound nearly identical if you get a twin-tip muffler version of it.

After further review, it appears Stromung has raised their prices. Still cheaper than the Cobb setup, but not by much.

Yeah I've got it. I love the sound, though it's major $$$. Come down to firestone at some point and listen to people's setup.

Personally i have the spt catback with the catted cobb dp and its not loud in the car at all. If you get on it with the windows down it really opens up though.

If you're too lazy to go to Firestone, then just go to YouTube. There of tons of clips on the sounds of different exhausts on WRXs and STIs.

+1 for cobb, we have it on my dad's FXT and it's quiet around town but sounds sweet when you open it up.

I have a straight pipe on the rally car (1 resonator and 1 high flow cat) and it's one of the best sounding exhausts i've heard. surprisingly quiet as well until you rev it up

Not trying to steal the thread but I have sort of the same question. I have got pulled over a few times now after having my HKS high power on for a few years now for some reason the cops are starting to care. Anyway I am looking at what my options are without going back to a completely stock exhaust I really just want something that looks more stock and maybe less like a sideways fart can. I am at a stage 2 right now kind of wondering if there is anyway to maybe bolt up my stock 05 axle back to my 3inch mid-pipe? I know it would take a cut and a weld but would it even be worth it or would you guys suggest just picking up something differnt?

The axle-back stock exhaust is THE most restrictive part of the cat-back stock exhaust. Weld in a resonator to tone down what you have, or else see if someone wants to trade.

    Furthermore, HKS EXASTS R THE BESTTt!1!1 -madboiHKS86
