Nothing wrong with CMUs, in fact, I'd take them over a lot of the crap poured foundations I've seen. It's just so labor intensive that few builders do it on a large scale anymore. Maybe the housing crunch is hitting them so hard that the labor has gotten cheaper than the cement (and the gas for the trucks) again? It's just that for a year I was in, on average 2-3 new houses a day, all over the area, and in that time I did not see a single CMU foundation. ICF is my favorite, but it's got drawbacks too (cost-wise mostly).
Sad! I can't open the pics for some reason and I'm about to burst from curiosity! I wanna see!! *Krissy stands on her tippy toes..*
Same here for the links on the first page. I can see the latter posted pictures though, looks good! -Steve
you should, then when its done you can put together a video of your house being built in like 2 mins with all the pics you took...
Congrats! It's my dream to build a home in the country with Jason and stay there for the rest of our lives. You have every right to be excited and I hope to see more pics to come. I hope you wouldn't mind if I came to you for advice when we're ready for something like this. Save your company cards for referrals for us!

From What I Know everytime counts. Using quality materials gets really expensive, for instance "decking screws" I've worked with composite wood and it takes a special screw to give it a nice strong hold but no stick out. With cheap, rap screws from Home-Depot or Menard's the screw head breaks off before being tapped in. They may cost 20 bucks but they will ruin the deck forever. But I spent a $130 dollars for a 1,000 screws to make sure that everything is top quality. Back to my point, anytime quality is involved the price tends to skyrocket. So contractors now like to use foam instead of plywood as a base surrounding the house, this cause's houses to fall quite easily during a storm. Plywood is stronger and flexable but double the price. For a contractor like myself I think I would use the cheaper stuff. Unless I know you personally. ooppps sorry bout the rant.
notice something about those pictures... like lack of other houses. Damn dude.. do you hear banjo's playing? just givin ya **** buddy I bet it's damn nice out there.
WOW, good luck man, looks like a great start so far! I cant wait to see the progress. btw, is that going to be a development? or do you own all that land?
come over and I will make you squeal like a pig.... actually the in-laws house is just off the side of one of the pics.. like 300 meters away... the next house is about 1/2 a mile... no development.. buying the land form the in-laws.. we are buying 10 acres, but as it stands on paper we are buying 40 acres till they rezone it this year.. then selling 30 back to the parents... they own 80acres right there.. pretty much all that land you see...
thats awsome. imo, thats the way to live. im a bit jaded right now because i can touch both of my neighbors houses by reaching out my window. but congrats man.
thanks.. the guy who is framing is more specialized in the trim work.. my good buddy... and he is very particular... either him or the contractor is taking care of that.... but soon enough some welding with TiG lessons ha ha h

You're very lucky to have found a nice space. I spent the last 2 years trying to get someone to sell me ~10 acres in the Fargo-Moorhead area for less the 8k an acre. No one would sell, they're all waiting for the next housing development to be proposed and built on their land. Urban sprawl doesn't seem to be a problem anyone is concerned with up here.
doing any special lo-vo wiring? Like built in home theater, whole house audio, networks, security, etc?
nope... not in the over blown budget.. ha ha ha I wish I could.. but wife isnt so impressed with that stuff so we wont.. just simple theater system I try... so does that mean you arent calling tonight View attachment 11434
not the latest as of today but never had my camera.. the storm friday night blew the trusses off my workshop and snapped a few, but now they have em back om (most of em) and the plywood/hardieboard or whatever it is on it.. so both garages almost have their basic roof on... will get some more pics tomorrow...
