OK, so many many moons ago, when I had a bunch of Subie Bucks kicking around, dying to be spent, I ordered up a whole slew of trim clips for my 2001 RS to replace the ones that were missing. One of the clips was the one that holds the driver's side floor mat in place. I probably tried to install that thing a dozen different times, but could never work it out. There never seemed to be anywhere to hook it into behind the hole in the carpet.

Well, yesterday, I had a eureka moment. While I was standing around in the post office car park, waiting for them to re-open after their siesta, I decided to see if I could put the clip back in on my new car, since it had fallen out, and looked like it wouldn't be too hard to put back. It also looked nothing like the one Bielke gave me, so I didn't expect any trouble from it.

So, I found out fairly quickly, that this clip and the one I got for my RS *are* in fact identical. It turned out that the clip couldn't quite be wiggled back into the hole in the carpet. It had a tabbed clip in the middle that looked like it needed to be undone, so I got a little screwdriver out on my Leatherman, and unclipped it. All of a sudden, the clip looked just like the one I had in the US...

So, apparently, the long bit doesn't get stuffed into some mystery hole in the bodywork under the carpet, but instead, you squish it together a bit...

Then stuff it through the hole in the carpet, and squish it a bit more until the tab in the middle clicks into place... (Not fully clicked into place here, obviously.)

Thus the long bit becomes two shorter arms that hold it under the carpet. So, that's my mystery solved. Unfortunately, it's a crap design, and as the hole in the carpet stretches over the years, these clips become more and more worthless. What a shame.

    Stuart.

yep. fwiw, the '08s have a metal bar that spans the back edge of the mat, with two pegs, that actually bolts to the car. Props to the engineer that saw this as a detail worthy of improvement...

Did you like how I managed to sneak in a couple of peeks at the roof vent in the above pics ? That was entirely by accident. No, it was, honest.

I still haven't had a chance to really play with the car. This weekend marks the end of a couple of very time consuming things that have been going on, so I'm hoping to make a good run up the mountain next weekend. I wonder if the kids want to go along.

Nope, the one I had was still in the bag, but went to the new owner of my RS. The lads at Morries Mtka should be able to help you out, though.
