does anyone know how I rewire my fog light switch so they can do the following? be on without the headlights being on. be on when my high beams are on. still shut off when I turn the car off. Thanks
negative. the relay already get's power right from the battery. you need to re-wire it to bypass the headlight switch. on my XT6, all it was was grounding one wire. I'm studying FSM diagrams now, will post back in a minute.
Fog Light Mod I was thinking of doing this mod as well and was planning on following these directions, or as close as I can being that I have an '02. hard to tell from those write-ups, as they don't refer to wiring diagrams (wow...I've been staring at diagrams for so long, write-ups with pictures don't even make sense any more :eek3 anyway. looking at the 04 impreza FSM that I have, looks like all you'd have to do is ground this wire at the switch (notice the little red line I added to bypass the diode and headlight switch straight to ground. you don't have to ground it there, anywhere will do. when I did it on my XT6, I grounded it with the radio, which I was installing at the same time). it looks like you might have to cut that RG wire between the high-beam relay and fog switch, and hook the switch up to an ign switched power source, as the other diagram doesn't really make sense. but, in theory, that wire should get power all the time, as it's the R wire from that relay that goes to the high-beams. so it's still on the un-switched side of the circuit. couple pics of my XT6 with this mod:
This. Pull a switched positive from wherever, go from there to the switch, from the switch to the relay, relay to ground. The parking lights are easy because they are a switched positive right on the steering column. The relay works either direction - positive and ground can be on either pole of the switch circuit. EDIT: ignore that, i didn't think you were talking about the stock switch. chux is right, just ground pin 7 from the switch - it's the yellow/something wire. Why do you want your fogs on when the high beams are on?
ryan who?? I am planning on using the stock switch. I want the fogs with highs because I do a lot of country driving to and from my parents and my in laws. I like how the fogs help light up the ditch. okay, so for some reason wiring things in my car is beyond me, it is very intimidating for what ever reason. can someone who has done this lend me a hand??? boomer??
pop the switch out (take the cover for the fuses off, push from behind). Cut the yellow (i think it's striped) wire (with a lot left on both sides) or get a vampire clip on it. add some wire to it and run it to the nearest available bolt. Should take less than 5 minutes. One of the bolts on the pedal assemblies would work. EDIT: btw, if you're looking at anything the fog lights illuminate, you're not looking far enough down the road to actually avoid stuff. Fogs are best used with everything else off (including the headlights) and when it's foggy or otherwise very low visibility.
There is a big blue wire (key switch power) that goes along the back side of your fuse box. On my 03 WRX I tapped into that for my heated seat power source.

fogs are great for lighting up the road right in front of you. yea, you can't avoid anything that close, but it's a really good indication of road conditions (ice, hardpack snow, dry pavement, etc.). even while having the highs on to look out for deer and such in the distance. IMHO, any extra light is good. and yea, pull the switch, grab the YL (yellow with a blue stripe...for those unfamiliar with wire color codes ....assuming they're the same as the 04 imp diagrams), cut it and hook it up to a ground. but following the power supply diagrams, fuse FB-31 (going to the relay) goes right to the battery via a fusible link.
