My car was always stock until my 2.5 swap. I got a cel for misfire with this motor. After a compression check i was 30% lower in cylinder 3. It didn't burn any oil so I believe it is a burnt valve which is fairly common on WRXs with this mileage from what I have read. Most just repair it but I did the swap cause I wanted to do that anyways. The 143k miles was mostly highway and oil was always changed at 3-5k mile intervals. I am the 2nd owner, the first was a salesman who drove everywhere. I think someone could throw a new valve in and be on their way or build the heads for a 2.5 Shortblock swap and sell the short block or whatever. I removed the engine myself and was very careful not to get crud in it or bang it around.

Bonus: timing belt was changed 20k miles ago. 8)

Fair deal. The mis-fire is probably due to a burnt exhaust valve...like you stated. That was most common in the 02 models only, because the 03's have different valves. Also can be due to running holiday gas.

I may be interested. Depending on what is wrong with mine. $450 is a fair price, but I'm at 133k now. Don't know if I want to step it up to 143k! Almost rather do a 257 swap.

Sounds good guys. Let me know. I think swapping valves would work based on symptoms. I drove the car into the garage. The car was running quite smooth besides the cel. It wasn't shaking violently or knocking or anything of the sort.
