So I changed plugs after experiencing what could be described as a slight miss, occasional idle irregularity, and a feeling of being a little under powered. I noticed the front driver side plug was wet with oil. Not a huge amount but certainly different than the other 3 and definitely wet. At that point I should have done a compression test and will do so next weekend. The condition basically went away after changing the plugs but now approx 4 or 5 months later the symptoms have returned and I notice a "clatter" sound but not quite severe enough to call a knock. I do not notice any oil burning however. Im 1/4 to 1/2 qt low at oil change so nothing terribly shocking. From what Ive gathered, it is most likely broken or cracked ring/s? A compression test will obviously tell me more. Your input is appreciated.
This seems like a good place to interject another question. I had a similar experience recently when I changed my plugs. All but one had some residue on it, however this was external not internal. Through asking around I've heard that the seals between the valve cover and the spark plug tube can go bad and is not that uncommon. Should I replace the valve cover gaskets or is this actually a common occurrence and not something to lose sleep over?
Valve cover gaskets was the other thought but there was no oil external to the threads on the plug, only the electrode. This would also not explain my piston slap.
Sounds like potentially a cracked ringland, but the compression test will help a lot. Any smoke from under the oil cap after running?
Yep, probably the valve cover gaskets or possibly valve guide seals. I would monitor and plan on replacing when you get a chance. As long as it was only a small amount, not urgent.
Good deal. Yeah they weren't swimming in oil or anything, but there was enough to raise the question. I'll plan on replacing them this summer when I'm not in the middle of moving across three states.
