Collecting my parts!!! My double-cross drilled WRX crank, picked up from the dealer. Also Kostamojen's Legacy NA 2.0R JDM headers.
I dunno..... end of July??? lolz just sent out my inquiry on CP Pistons. Current state of the block. 3.818 inch bore size 96.9772 mm bore size 450hp target; turbo application track/time attack use; pump gas/E85 map 3.814" piston size wanted (.004" clearance), but can take recommendation. -.004" piston to deck STOCK EJ22T style dish 9.0:1CR Head Gasket is 0.0315" (.8mm) thick Cylinder heads are 50cc '06 WRX heads
This is how the block looks like honed to 3.816-3.817". We'll see if honing it out to 3.818" will get ride of the shadow. You can see where it's reinforced, it helped with the ovaling. If it was an open deck, you'd see it differently. This is why closed deck is nice. Many blocks are closed deck, even the M3's straight 6 is a close deck. This is on the factory sleeves and all. That's how it looks like at the moment.
Waiting for the pistons to arrive next week. A few parts arrived.... GR2 struts so I can drive on smoother suspension.... AND intake manifold along with some ARP BLOCK CASE BOLTS. These bolts look pretty beefy!
okies.... I my set of pistons came in. They are very fast!!! The valve reliefs are made for EJ22T heads. They were suppose to be for '06 WRX heads. The valves are placed differently from the EJ22T and the EJ205/EJ255/EJ257. SO I have these BRAND NEW Custom CP Pistons in a 9.0:1CR for 50cc heads with wrong valve reliefs. They'll bring up the compression on an EJ22T longblock to something like 9.5:1-9.9:1CR. So I might have them forsale if I can't get them remade. This is how they look like.. cell phone pics (LG Dare)
Congrat's on finally receiving the correct order. Can't wait to see the Black Mamba V2 will do to my shorts. LOL
a little over $20,000. pay check by pay check. I'm getting old. time to move on... lolz no more cars stuff... too much $$$.. lolz .... seriously though, it takes a lot of $$$ I just got back from the machine shop this morning.. #5 thrust bearing cut. Should be done shortly by the end of this week. Time to save up $$$.... *sigh*
You have the SAME pistons...you're slow too! we shall see... mid sept? hahha I need to get it done so I can drive down to go salmon fishin in WI! Two more porting bits came in yesterday so porting should go by pretty quick...if I keep porting... lolz
The shortblock is getting work done. Tomorrow or the next day I get to pick it up. This is the current state.
keeps the block from expanding at higher temps, keeps bearings close to the crank, keeps oil feeding the rods, minimize oil starvation ad few others I might have not thought about. Here are the pics of the engine back from the machine shop. The ARP block case bolts hold too tight possibly so oil clearance is very little. I'm ordering extra clearance ACL mains.
Here's the update... to whoever may be reading... The main bearings are COSWORTH Size1 mains. I'm using ARP block case bolts to keep these bearings tight even at the worst temperatures. Minimizing the block cases from expanding apart helps keep oil moving from main journals to the crank, therefore getting oil to your rods. ARP calls for 70ft lbs on these case bolts. When tightening them on #1/#2/#3/#4 the crank can still move. Anything over 40ft lbs on #5 main and the crank will start to not spin freely. Torque it down to 70ft lbs and you're stuck with a crank that's gonna have a tough time spinning and you'll burn it. Keep in mind this is a BRAND NEW crank. The block was bolted down and lined-honed as well. Number 5 rear main was machined out to fit phase2 #5 thrust bearing on the EJ22T block. All bearings brand new. I did experiment with an EJ205 block I had. I took that apart, brought it downstairs and transferred over the COSWORTH bearings and crank. I torqued it down and the same thing happened. So now I know that my block is ok. Well I took the thrust bearing that was still on the WRX motor; threw a rod bearing and put it in with my new crank on my EJ22T. So it goes Cosworth bearings 1-4 and OEM xxxxxmiles WRX #5 thrust. Torqued it down to 70ft lbs on the back and the crank spun. This concludes that #5 thrust from the Cosworth bearing set is too tight, unless they mixed a size0 in with it. However if torqued down to OEM specs; 37lbs the crank will still spin. It just won't spin when its torqued down via ARP specs for the ARP case bolts. Bearings come in sometime this week possibly. ACL Racing main bearings #5 thrust .001" more clearance. Maybe I should have bought a set of Std bearings as well. I might do that too.
This port is ALMOST done. I just need to blend the valve seat with the port runner...that's it. But this is the TRUE Double-D!!!!
An update: So I have my block back from the machine shop. The thrust bearing helped out and the crank spins. Clearances where checked and are within specs. A little close to tight on Journal #1, which was interesting. The main journals where line-honed with the ARP case bolts holding the block halves together. Then the inside block was resurfaced for the line hone. The block was redecked to give a nice fresh layer for the mating the heads. The cylinders where honed out to 3.819" to accommodate the 3.815" CP pistons with Teflon coated skirts, giving me almost a .004" piston to wall clearance. The crankshaft is rotated balance along with the OEM STi flywheel, ACT pressure plate, crankshaft sprocket, OEM crank pulley. Surprisingly the OEM crank pulley is balanced from factory and looks like what was balanced was just the crank and pressure plate and MAYBE the OEM FW. All of the Eagle rods where checked and balanced. The custom CP pistons I had made where ALL within almost equal of each other so they didn't need to be balanced. One of 6pt case bolts at the BOTTOM of the oil pump broke when taking the block halves apart. I wasn't able to get that out and D&G was able to get that out and put helicoil in. I have purchased a '06 WRX oil pan and dipstick. This will help clear the JDM 2.0R headers I have, which run the same as the JDM Twinscroll headers by the oil pan. Crower valve springs are coming in and I need to order ARP head studs as well. I need to finish porting my heads so I can get the shortblock put together and slap on the heads. I also need to purchase a 06 WRX gauge cluster or 05+ STi cluster for the immobilizer deal. Then splice in my wiring into the chassis.
I like this picture! I am excited. Mind if I ask how much they charged to do all of the short block work? Also your .004" clearance is noticeable in the picture, good thing for the longer skirts.
anywhere from $1000-$1500 depending how much they have to fiddle with your block. The top is always a little wider and flares out like so. Yes, the long skirts!!!
