A year or so ago I had my brother grab my old GT Dyno that was laying around his shed so I could eventually restore it. I got it back here and did a little research off the serial number and found out that it is from 1987. I actually picked it up used from a friend in 94 I believe for $50. I plan to sand blast and powder coat it Mirror Blue for the primary color as its pretty close to the original and the accents will be mirror white. They other small pieces will be done in reflective chrome. I still need to find one wheel as I currently have a mismatched set. I also had the original rear frame stand style pegs but I don't know if they are still around at my parents or not, hopefully so as they are actually worth a bit of money. Other then that a new set of brakes, cables and a hopefully a set of reproduction graphics will get this back on the road in a few weeks. Here are some pictures I took today after the tear down was complete. Tioga 3 piece crank Drain pipe style
I have a Dyno Compe that I bought back in the early 90's and plan to do something similar. Very cool!!
I'm thinking about doing a metallic clear over the blue and maybe the white, just to give it a little more pop. I'm not planing on selling it so the 100% original restore to make the most money isn't needed. I just want to get it back to looking good and enjoy cruising around with it. Plus my 4 y/o has already laid claim to it once he's big enough to ride it.
This thread takes me back down ol' memory lane...thanks for that! Keep the updated pics coming!! Love the Dyno's...i was always a Haro guy myself. This pic wasn't MY actual bike(found on the googlez)...but i had one just like it and it was by far my favorite bike that i ever owned! Also had this one!
I actually love nearly all old school bmx bikes. Before I got this bike as a kid I always wanted a Haro, Mongoose or GT
Just came across these on the old intrawebs... I might have to order them up cause I'm diggin the look! http://www.ebay.com/itm/20-Skyway-D...ikeparts_SR&var=&hash=item2c786c69bb#shpCntId
Yessir! My favorite riders were Rick Moliterno and the Condor and no suprise who they rode for! Lol I tried out a few Dynos and they all felt too heavy to me. I loved the looks of them and some of the features. But damn my Haro was featherlight! Not the Sport tho...that sucka was heavy! Mongoose makes me think of...
Only the most underrated movie of the 80's!!!! You can actually watch that movie in its entirety in like 6 sections on youtube. I did that about a year ago, introduced the wife to awesomeness.
Got most everything sandblasted this afternoon. I still have to finish stripping the old graphics off the frame and front forks, that's where there is still some blue remaining.
Nice, duder. I picked up my early 90s Dyno Air with 3 spoke mag wheels from my parents house a few years ago. I should really update it a bit and ride the **** out of it.
I rode my 20" for the first time in 5 years today.. That needs some tlc, it makes noises a bike shouldn't make.
Brings back some good memories. Had a GT Vertigo myself and I rode that thing from sunrise to sunset every day during the summer. Good old days!
I decided to change things up s little, instead of the reflective chrome I went with charcoal metallic for the center part of the crank sprocket, the seat neck, and the from neck for the bars
Keep us posted on your progress, I have a soft spot in my heart for GT Bikes. Here's mine (not BMX, I know):
I haven't been able to work on the bike recently. But I am hoping to get the White done on Wed or Thurs. I'll post up some pictures when I get them done.
Well the plan of working on the bike as I wanted didn't quite happen. I did manage to get some things done today though. I did the main accent pieces in white and figured I'd try an experiment at the same time. I added the smallest amount of blue in with the white to see if I could get a speckled effect and low and behold it worked out. Here are the end products. They are taken with my phone so the quality isn't the best but you can get the idea. Once i put some of the small pieces back together I'll take another few pics.
Found a local guy on Craigslist today selling a bunch of old school bmx parts that I swung buy and just had to grab some parts from. I scored 2 sets of pegs, 1 of which are actual GT factory pegs, a new set of wheels with GT hubs, and a new set of grips!!!
Nice progress! I finally snapped a ****ty cell phone pick of my bike. It needs a new rear bearing and front brake cable to be back in operation.
I bought it brand new when I was 15 and it had been hanging in the garage at my Parents house until recently. I can't wait to get it back together and hurt myself really bad.
Awesome bike man! That looks a lot like one of my friends that I used to know growing up in prior lake. The fact that you have the Frame standers on the front is even more bad ass.
I like this thread! Nice work on the paint btw I have a Robbinson MX that is still in good shape! Bought it after my Gt dyno got stolen from me when i was 14. Just needs a new rear wheel. Apparently i beat the crap out of it
This thread is awesome! My first bmx bike was a GT dyno in 1998. I rode the hell out of it. Then bought an Eastern and lost all the skin on my face and stopped bmxering for ever. I stopped in at a bike store recently. Bmx has came a long crazy way. BIKES ARE SO F***ing light weight now! I really really want to build a bike and a nice 6 pack trail across the river in lilydale..
This is my new bike, they have come a long way sense 2008 even.. If you want to ride dirt sometime, hit me up there are some awesome trails in st. Anthony/ Roseville.
I am going to sell both of my wagons and invest in bmx bikes. Subarus are sttuuuuupiiddd.. Gonna get my bike back together and start riding for sure!
So I'm going to bump this back from the dead! I finally have an oven to fit larger projects and of course the first thing I do is coat my Dyno Frame that wouldn't fit in my old oven. Stuck with the Mirror blue and high gloss. All the parts are coated now. The last things to do is pick up tubes, tires, brakes and re-grease all the bearings and assemble! The last thing I'm going to do is see if a local vinyl shop can recreate the graphics. Here are the pics from tonights fun. Just put the blue down and waiting for it to flow out Clear is on and and waiting for full cure! And the End result! Super stoked for this to finally come together!
Well I spent A few hours last night working on the bike as I watched game 1 of the NBA finals. Regreased the bearings in the frame of the bike and but it back together for the most part. Still need to clean up the wheels I picked up and re grease the hubs, as well as get new hardware for the handle bars and seat clamp. I do need to stop and grab some tires as well. Up in the air on weather I want white tires or black though.
Thanks Lee. I'm hoping to have it on the maiden voyage this weekend. Brennon (My son for those that don't know) and I will be cruising the streets on the NW side like a couple bosses
