Just make sure they're fairly central (not 2 hours away), not in an area where noise ordinances would be a problem, through traffic is at a minimum, and safety can see most (all?) of the course from one spot... sounds bleak, but I'm sure there's something out there.

    Also, where's the S-talking thread?

Would anybody want to co-drive my car?

I ask because I want to start getting some outside opinions about the setup and behavior. I've done a bit of work on the suspension running through a number of iterations where I finally got to a point I really like for mixed use (rally-x, auto-x, daily), but I'm curious if I'm missing aspects. I feel I may be too used to the car to pick up on smaller details and where I may be automatically compensating for some things that I shouldn't. I would just like to start getting other people's opinions on the car, how it drives, and what can be improved. I'm tickled pink for where it's gotten me for what the car is, but I feel it could be better still. Sometimes you just need someone else to experience it and say "hmm, this is kind of funny" or "such and such works great, but I feel I'm fighting the car doing so and so." It's things I won't notice because I already know what the car's going to do, and I've probably already readjusted my inputs to make it work.

i would volunteer but I'd either a) roll it, b) put it off a small cliff or c) bash it into a large rock

    Haha.

Well, the field does have all 3 aspects...the trifecta of destruction.

Your car's still running though is it not? Or did something happen again?

I was going to ask a similar question. Being that this is my first event I'm wondering if anyone that knows what they're doing would want to ride along with me on one or two of the runs so i could get some input and advice on how to improve my driving skills.

i refuse to rallyx that car in current form. anyone that's driven it can understand why. it's not that it has low hp - the problem is where the powerband is and the gearing. zero fun to drive in rallyx conditions - it would not be a confidence booster, it would make me ****ing mad. every time we've used it for something similar to rallyx (GPTPR, OFR super special) it's been awful. I also don't have any extra money to put into an entry fee after spending enough to buy a really nice bugeye wrx within the past 3 weeks.

I could co-drive in your car. I know there are other people with more experience and knowledge about rallyx and car setup, but I'd be happy to give you any input I have. And I also like riding along with other drivers and learning tips from them.

i see what you did there! we need to come up with something new for lspr....

    back to topic...

I've tried as well to gather additional venues for rallyx with no luck. It's amazing with the amount of farm fields in this state that more people wouldn't jump on this opportunity

Like they do with your mom?

Seriously tho, I'm sure the neighbors and noise factor plays into it. Lexi had a great idea with a CL ad, but I'm not sure what came of all of that.

between you and carl my mom now thinks asian express stands for small portions, a lot of "talking it up", and you leave still hungry:laugh:

I posted at least 5 different ads on CL throughout the spring looking for rally-x venues...as you can see we're still using the same spots:(

I'm simply looking for input with fresh eyes. I really don't expect people to know everything about car physics and car control. That alone is an en devour for the individual to go through. Driving fast or slow doesn't matter, good or bad lines doesn't matter. I'm really just looking for input on what works and what doesn't. I know I've compensated for what doesn't through my own driving techniques, and I really need people who haven't yet to point out the weird things. My end goal has always been to create a car that I didn't need to fight, a car where I could drive it and not be forced to compensate for shortcomings or a less then perfect setup. I don't call it perfect now, but I feel it's getting pretty close.

I agree with riding along with others. It's always interesting to see how other people drive, not only how they control the car but also the lines they take. Sometimes it also shows you past the assumed limits of a car showing additional capability you didn't previously know was there. It's one thing I love about MAC auto-x Test & Tune days, tons of ride alongs and the opportunity to both ride along with someone who knows the car and to drive the car yourself...if they're willing to let you drive.

So how about this. I'll plan for both 1 and 2 courses. We'll go with 2 smaller courses if it rains. Otherwise we'll go with one longer course and move things around in the afternoon if the track gets too rutted up.

So what kind of elements do people want to see? What do people not like?

I actually really liked the spiral that was at Dog Daze. It would be cool to have one on the hill so you'd have to also account for gravity moving around the loops.

I'm a fan of moderate speed kinks, i.e. high speed slaloms but maybe not with as much road width as you would like to turn it into smooth curves forcing you to straighten out between kinks and pick specific lines for the kink.

I don't know. I'm weird. I like goofy stuff and constraints that may require less then smooth transitions. Complex corners, limited road width, awkward transitions. A fast, flowing course can be fun, but it can also sometimes get too easy and too boring where you don't really have to think about it. Sometimes you just need a strange braking point like a broken decreasing radius corner when it's two 90 degree curves with a short straight in between. You won't break through the corner but will instead have to pick a point towards/in the short straight section into the second corner. Thinks like kinks with constrained road width forces a definite brake zone, corner, and end where you have to keep the car straighter instead of simply running a wide curve or kick the car way out. I like a course that forces you to stay tidy where speed comes from precision and cleanliness. The problem is rally-x pretty much always allows a ton of run off and width because you really can't create an off the road situation with a penalty to speed although cones could be used, but that may be a lot of cones, and folks may not want to get a 20 second penalty simply for slightly overshooting one corner.

Two courses would allow both a fast course and technical course. One long course may simply try to do both where the first section may be an oh crap, oh crap section and the second half is all weeeeeeee.

So you want to do circles around the ginger!

I was thinking the other way around... first half is fast and flowing, just to build up your confidence until you hit the frustrating and slow back half... we'll call it the demoralizer... JK, it sounds like we'll have a few first timers, so I definitely want to make it fun for all skill levels as well as spectators.

    Newb Question:

So having never come to this Rallyx in Cannon Falls....and since i'm only coming for now to spectate, where can I park and what kind of vehicle can I bring.

I know it kind of ironic as its a Rally event but can my lowered car get in the bean field and park, or am i gonna have to bring the truck?

I just want to come and check out the setup and take pictures, any other pertinent info. I should know?

    Thanks,
    STI/SS_carnatic

Most lowered cars shouldn't be a problem unless they're slammed. When you get there, head to the registration table, they will help you out.

If you're really low, you can just park on the edge of the road/driveway with the trailers. That spot can be a great spot to watch and take pictures.

If you want to be close to the course and taking pictures you'll need a spotter with you. (any friend will do)

You can also volunteer to help out, you'll get to talk to people more in-depth and get closer to the action.

You'll need to go to the registration tent to get a waver and wrist band also.
(If you want, you can even get the weekend membership form for free (IIRC) if you want to get a ride along or two. Good for $15 off a year membership. ;)

I'm still waiting to hear back from HotCarl if I can borrow his snows. I don't want to run on my RE92's. Carl, see that little section in the top right? You should see at least a number 1 in bold. ;)

A lowered car can stay in the driveway too if you don't want to venture down into the field. I did run this event on RCE Wagon/Prodrive STI springs which is a pretty low setup, but higher is better so you at least don't get hung up or just do a bunch of belly dragging around the track.

You should be in PA with Carl's tires. Here is a chunk of the rulebook about SA cars.

    2. Tires must be DOT approved. Snow tires are allowed. No studded tires
are permitted unless ice or snow are present. Studded tires may not be
homemade using bolts or screws. Only street-legal studs are allowed.
Tires may not interfere with any parts of the car (fenders, fender liners,
    suspension, etc).
“Aggressive” tires are prohibited. A tire will be considered an “aggressive
tire” if it meets any of the following criteria:
    a. It does not carry a DOT approval.
    b. It is marked “For competition only”, “Not for street use” or similar
    verbiage.
    c. It is modified or altered from its original tread pattern in any way

Matt, if prezawagon doesn't show or if he changes his mind and you're still awake I could co-drive your car. No big deal, I'm bringing my own car anyway. If you need me I will be around my blue smashed up WRX.
