Hgs on a 2.0 are somewhat uncommon, what are the symptoms? Assuming this IS a 2.0 wrx. (thanks for zero information other than wrx, chump)

my bad, it is 2.0 no mods beside an after market radiator. whats bothering me is the small coolent leak under the car on the driver side plus high milages. sometimes it will smell like burning oil and some rough start from time to time. oh, coolent in the black metal thing seems to go by quick. pour in some coolent, checked after awhile and its almost empty.

Doesn't mean it needs head gaskets. Some symptoms of subaru HGS going out:

Overflowing out of the overflow under boost
    Violently bubbling overflow
lots of black crud in overflow
And the obvious over heating when getting off of freeway

Sounds like you just have a pretty large leak.

Thanks Josh! I think this one needs more diagnostic before the motor comes out. Like Erik said there are some tell tail signs to look for as he listed.

Just to add, in this weather if the head gaskets go it will overheat and the heater inside the car will blow ice cold. Doesn't sound like it's the head gasket to me either.
