Please bear with me as I am not the most mechanically inclined person.

I drive a 2006 Legacy 2.5GT with a little over 72K miles on it. Well I was driving down the highway the other day when suddenly I lost boost. No lights on the dash came on so I thought that was weird. Drove a couple miles to get home and I tried accelerating a few times and couldn't get any boost. I got in my driveway and heard a loud rattling noise coming from the engine compartment. I popped the hood and it sounds like it is coming from right under the intercooler on the left side.

I decided to check the oil level thinking maybe the turbo was bad due to lack of oil and no oil showed on the dipstick. I ended up putting 3 quarts of oil in it before it registered on the dipstick. So somehow it lost 3 quarts of oil. Its been about 4000 miles since the last oil change (used Mobil 1 extended life). I park the car in the garage and there are no oil spots anywhere on the ground so I know it's not leaking.

So now I am kinda stuck trying to figure this out. I don't want to spend an outrageous amount for the dealership to look at it so I thought I would ask if anyone might have an idea of what could be wrong or if someone knows a good place that would be cheaper than the dealer to bring it to get it looked at that does quality work.

I researched on legacygt.com and read a lot of people have issues with the factory turbo going out. I read about the notorious banjo bolt that stops oil flow to the turbo. I am not sure if that is the problem though and don't want to get a new one then find out it was something else. Also not sure if it might be a problem with the exhaust. If anyone could give me some ideas I would appreciate it. Thank you.

TURBO, TURBO, TURBO, change your oil every 3K, and stop using Mobil 1.

Sorry to hear that man, but sounds like turbo problem to me. Check all your turbo oil lines make sure they are not broken or cracked. You most likely will have to take your turbo out to inspect it. You will be lucky if it's just a turbo and nothing else going on. Driving without oil will cause lot's of problems.
