2003 Subaru WRX, has a gutted downpipe, gutted up pipe, SPT intake, GMBCS and stock CBE.

Was tuned a few summers ago by Nuke.

No CELs, replaced spark plugs and did an oil change about a month ago.

The sound started a week or so after replacing spark plugs. While in neutral the sound is audible from 1k - 2k, while in gear it's just barely audible while on throttle.

Should I be preparing for a rebuild?

    Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like a loose header with air escaping through it.

Doesn't sound life threatening, just make sure it has fresh oil, something good like Rotella T6 10W-40 or so. Just stay away from Mobile 1... Stay away...
I agree though, sounds like an exhaust leak.

Can't be an exhaust leak. I've had leaks before and they sounded much more tinny/metallic.
Double check for any missing screws and ensure all engine compartment pieces are secured. Maybe a screw popped off and fell into a crevice above the engine or maybe a portion of the engine is vibrating against something. Not likely the culprit but worth a check.

Rod knock, sorry time for a rebuild. Drain your oil and inspect it for bearing material.

    Thanks for the input guys/gals(?).

I always run Rotella 5w40 in my wrx. I haven't had a chance to check the spark plugs but when I installed them I checked, double checked, and triple checked to make sure that everything was tight. After reading a bit more it's probably safe to assume rod knock...and it literally sounds like a knock...lol

NF Performance you may be getting some business soon for a rebuild..

    Any other advice/opinions are welcome.

    Spot on.

Car is running 100% now, no rod knock, it was just a loose spark plug ><

Mods feel free to close the thread.
