2002 wrx cobb stage 2 81k miles, purchased at 57k miles. Treated with respect for as long as I've had it. No launches, hoonage, etc. I drove out to get lunch, the car ran fine. I drove back with my lunch and it started running odd. I have never experienced this before. It did not throw a CEL, but It was running very odd, idling up and down, not keeping a steady rpm, so I check codes with my ap. Showed a missfire on all 4 cylinders. At one point the car died, and I had to wait a few minutes before I could keep it running, so I could limp it off the street. I was planning on changing spark plugs tonight, because I'm not sure if the previous owner had. No clanking or banging sounds. All help is welcome.
I've had misfires on my 02 since I bought it with 46,000 Tom. They would be random, from 1 cyl. to all cyl. The 02 is notorious for this. All of my research has led me to believe that the codes come from exhaust ports, why?, dunno. After a couple of minutes and clearing the codes, did it start right up and run fine?
There is a small damp spot on the top of the filter, about 2"x1" in size. Wouldn't it have to be dripping wet to cause any problems?
Nope, try cleaning the maf and your filter. I'd bet on it being from the rain today. It may be something worse, but we're "troubleshooting" here, and I'm pulling for ya!
What's the best way to clean my filter at work? I have a sink, a flat head screw driver, and household cleaning supplies available to me.
Take it off of the car and try to get it inside next to some heat. Try to dry it out until you leave for home.
Having taken the filter off, I can see that there is water on the inside of the cone. I'm hoping you're right, Josh.
I should be Tom. Dry it off a bit by dabbing it with a paper towel or something. The car runs so choppy when it gets wet that it can throw misfire codes. driftin240(Brian) said that K&N makes a foam pre-filter that slips over the cone fitler...helps prevent moisture from entering the maf.
I'd have to agree with Josh as well, I had the same thing happen to me when I hit a puddle, filter would get wet, car ran like it's running on 1 & 4 cylinders. Went back to the stock airbox, and no issues in the rain/puddles/lakes
HOLY CRAP!!!! I tried to microwave the filter so it would dry quicker, and it started a fire! What now!? j/k
I am one with the ninja edit *gong*. I'm starting to believe Josh had the cure. This thing is damp as hell. Not dripping wet, but damp enough for a days worth of stamps.
1)Throw it in the garbage. 2)Take a paper towel and rubber band, put the paper towel over the intake hole and wrap the rubber band around the tube to hold the paper towel in place. 20 hp gain is also to be expected! So prepare your butt dyno for uber satisfaction!!
MAF, ground, spark plugs, vac leak, or it could be some really ****ty gas (in all honesty, it happened with the SVX)
