ok, when first taking off in the morning tranny cold. car shifts just fine. but a few stop and starts and then it starts to scratch the gear going into 4th gear from 3rd. 70,000 miles.
fine down shifting. just does randomly. and at high rpms.
    any ideas?

I noticed the same thing in my 04, shortly after i had changed to royal purple synthetic.... switched back to regular conventional gear oil and have not had a problem sense.

I have heard, dont quote me on this, that synthetic fluids are "too slippery" for the subaru syncros.

Thats the problem, old worn out syncros and friction modifiers = grinds. Try some extra S, mnsubaru price of 8.07, I have lots in stock.

It doesn't matter. The transmission was designed around that oil's properties.

I was afraid of this when changing to Amsoil tranny fluid. Hence my recommendation for the Extra-S.

Extra-S can be purchased at Morrie's Minnetonka Subaru or Fred Beans Parts. Other places that sell Extra-S usually overcharge. 4 quarts for the main tranny plus another 1 quart for the rear diff.
