We need some help from one or more of of you to save my son's first car. There was a time when I would have rolled up my sleeves and got the wrenches out and have at it. But, now a days I will admit I have some difficulty in dealing with car maintenance.

The Car: '95, 2 dr Impreza coup, 2.2 ltr. automatic trans. 120,000 miles.
We have just put new brakes all around, radiator, and AC parts last year, about $1,200 in other under the hood work.

The problems: When the breaks were done the garage mechanic warned us the water pump was seeping and should be replaced soon and there appears to be a stuck valve (clickity-clack), so a valve job is also needed. The problem not a lot of extra cash on hand to replace the car or fix it. My son is 19 and has Asperger Syndrome & ADD, and is not mechanically experienced but can be a great assistant. He has helped with many of our home remodeling project and take direction well. He would be willing to assist with the repairs . . . if possible.

I have been in the Architectural Design field for 30 years doing custom home design for new or remodels and additions, commercial remodeling, etc. I have built many a deck, and remodeled a few Kitchens and bathrooms and would be glad to trade my design and construction skills for your mechanical know-how. 3D graphics and renderings of project plans would be included in the deal.

We live in Oakdale, MN (east side of the twin cities).

I hope one of you can help us out.

    Thank you in advance.

the clicky clack is pretty common on 2.2s its the hydraulic lash adjusters, you need to pop the valve covers off and see which ones need to be replaced, my 2.2 does it sometimes, perhaps try switching to a thicker oil to see if they pump up? as for the water pump, its pretty easy, You'll probably want to do a timing belt @ the same time.

It sounds like you have the exact same car I do. '95 Impreza coupe 2.2l w/ an auto, although mine has 186k on it.

The water pump is not that big of a deal. Do you have the maintenance records for the car? If you do you should check to see if the timing belt has already been done or not. In order to get to the water pump you will need to remove the timing belt (a piece of cake on the 2.2l motor, compared to anything newer than 97) If the timing belt has not been done I would highly recommend replacing that while you are in there. I believe a new water pump is <$60, not too bad.

I have done all of this ^ stuff before to my own car, and would be willing to help you out. However I have never done a valve job before so I cant be of too much help there.

An idea for the clikity clacks. Check your oil level. On mine when the oil is low (down about 1qt) it starts clicking and clacking like there is no tomorrow from the hydraulic lash adjusters as 3rik metnioned.

Oh and i highly doubt it will need a valve job, just some adjusters.

Both Chiltons and haynes make manuals that cover the mid 90s impreza. I do not recall which one is better.
