I would like some help installing my boost and oil pressure gauges. I have all the parts and just wanted someone that has done these before to help out with the wiring etc. I could figure it out, but figure if someone has time and wants to make a little money to help me, it would make it go faster and easier. I'm going to mount them and run the wires down below the dash today so it will be ready to finish. Help would be appreciated! THANKS! 6128191630
and they are both electronic gauges I prolly need to get some more wire since its not long enough to get to the oil pressure sensor
I bought the SMY Clustermaker pod, so the gauges are mounted next to the factory gauges http://www.importimageracing.com/smy-clustermaker-gauge-pod-for-08-12-wrx-sti.html
I would use fuse taps into the fuse box on the left side of the dash. When are you doing this install and how much are you offering? I live near there. It should be very easy if you already have it all in place.
Yes. Daisy chain between the left and right gauge if you pull power from the clock or stereo harness. Other way around if you tap the fuse box. Use a factory oil galley plug at the factory oil pressure sensor location (under alternator). Pretty easy install. Fishing the wires through the fender is probably the hardest part (you have a GR, right)?
I just ordered the exact same setup, except I got the oil filter adapter plate. Any reason to use the oil galley plug instead? Also, as far as running the wires, can't you just run them through the firewall?
...and you signature line strikes again! haha The dude with SMY recommended to get the adapter plate...probably just wanted more $$. Anyway, can I just use the existing galley plug, or it sounds like I can get one from Subaru? I'm guessing that the sender plugs right into the galley plug or something?
Also the sandwich adapters always end up leaking. Galley plug is a subaru part. Basically a bolt with a npt thread through the middle. Take your temp probe with you to make sure it fits the plug. GR doesn't have the same firewall grommet behind the clutch pedal like GD. There's one on the side that goes into the wheel well/fender. Use that one or drill a hole in your firewall lol
Ok thanks, good to know. Hopefully they stock the plugs at the dealer. And no, I don't plan on drilling any holes through the firewall. And the previous owner made a "boo-boo" will the seal around the steering column...remind me to tell you the story some time lol.
Did you get ProSport gauges? If so, you'll need a galley plug with 1/8" NPT threads: http://prosportgauges.com/subaru-oil-galley-plug.aspx If you got Defi gauges, then you can use the OEM galley plug. No parts to buy at all. The galley plug behind the alternator is quite easy to get at. Run the wires through the driver's side fender.
Thanks for that useful info Ben, as I did buy the ProSports. I saw your pics on the SMY website - they look good!
I have the next few days off and since it will be in the 40's this weekend would be good. Would OReilly have the fuse taps? I need to pick up some wire too. I have a garage, but its not heated. PMd you
radioshack for this kind: http://www.radioshack.com/product/i...tm_content=Exact&utm_campaign=PLA&cagpspn=pla oreillys or a big napa (like the one off 280) for this kind: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/we...e&utm_campaign=enhancedrm&utm_content=5080114
Thanks for the help everybody. I'm going to get started doing it now. After some messaging Xluben back and forth, it seems simple now. Just not looking forward to the galley plug and running wires through the firewall
I got everything done today for both gauges except for installing the oil pressure sensor with the oil galley plug. All the wires are ready for the it, but I don't want to do this part myself. They say to use this oil galley plug on the drivers side. (see pic) Anybody want to help? I can drive to you or whatever is easier.
I didn't bother taking my tire off and taking apart the wheelwell plastic to run the wires, so I pushed them out of the firewall plug until I could see them in the fender (looking from behind the drivers door into the front fender) and then you can hook them with something and fish them up into the upper front fender and route them to the battery/fuse box area. I used protective wire wrap on the wires and it looks good. It was much easier
Don't use that location for the oil pressure sensor. Use the one behind the alternator. Just remove the OEM sensor.
Not sure if it will fit there. Its bigger than the Defi one, and mine also isn't designed to replace or splice into the factory sensor. Wouldn't a dash light come on if I removed the factory?
It'll fit. Or at least you can make it fit. No cel with the factory one unplugged. Your oil light on your dash just won't work, but that's more of a "you're ****ed" indicator anyway.
My pleasure! Thanks for hooking my garage up with cable tv! I might get even less work done out there now! When you get a chance can you post the part number or a picture of the box for the oil pressure gauge? This is the 3rd one like it that I've installed and I'd recommend against it. Nothing wrong with the gauge/sensor itself, but install on a Subaru is not at all a plug and play situation given the size of the pressure sensor.
Yeah, I would suggest buying the Defi sender assuming it uses the same wires as Prosport. It's included in the oil pressure gauge box, but you can buy it as a replacement part. Here's the link. http://prosportgauges.com/performance-oil-pressure-sender.aspx
Hmph. Not happy to hear this, as I also ordered the same Prosport oil pressure/boost gauge setup. What did you guys have to do different to make the sensor fit? Any idea if the Defi sensor will work instead? Ben - did you have these issues on your WRX?
grind down about 4 fins on the alternator, but when you have to replace the alternator you'll have to do it again. The Prosport has a ground and then it has a green wire you run from the gauge to oil pressure sender. Anybody know what Defi uses?
It is suggested to use the relocation kit with the sender ProSport uses. It basically just adds a line that connects to the galley plug and moves the sender out from behind the alternator. http://prosportgauges.com/remote-oil-pressure-sender-installation-kit.aspx The Defi sender is much smaller and fits right behind the alternator with no issues.
iirc the prosport premium version comes with a slim sending unit and comes out cheaper than the performance version with relocation kit so I'd recommend going that route if possible. fwiw the Defi gauge I installed in a GR sti with SMY cluster didn't fit so well. Needed some gasketing for a snug fit. Otherwise it's a good product. Not sure on the voltage either. Personally I like the longacre racing one.
I put some foam double sided tape on my Defi gauges so they would be a snug fit into the SMY Cluster. I just left the backing on one side of the tape so it was a friction fit. I believe this is how the cluster was designed. He includes some wide rubber bands for this with the clusters now.
I wrapped mine with electrical tape until it was thick enough to keep in the hole. This worked well with both gauges I have had and my pod. (Not SMY)
His are the performance series. I installed a prosport premium in Tangled's car. Sender fits with no modifications needed but apparently can't survive a flood... weak lol
