I just installed a slim HID kit from DDM for my low beams and am having strange behavior with them. If the low beam light switch is in the on position when the car is started they work as they should. If the light switch is off or in the DRL position when started and switched to the low beams, the the HID do not come on. If the HIDs are on when driving and turned off, they will not turn back on. If they HIDs are on when driving and switched to DRL, they remain on, but at a lower intensity. Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas on what is going on? The car is a 2006 outback.
You either need to leave them on or risk having to buy new ones, the lower wattage of the DRL will roast them FAST. This happend on my tribeca, if you leave them on all the time you will be fine.
Had a similar issue with my '07 wrx and this was even with DRL disabled which was supposed to correct this. Although I'd have one on and one off or both on or both off, I never knew what to expect. I thought I had a bad ballast but swapped them and they both fired fine. I solved the issue by installing a new DDM slim kit with the resistor wiring kit and haven't had an issue since. I'd suggest disabling DRL's and see how it functions after that. You didn't mention if you'd done that or not.
So, it sounds like don't turn on DRLs, and best to disable them. Is there a good link for how to do that? What is happening when the DRL are on?- They are a separate bulb under the orange side lenses, so I did not think they would affect the HIDs. Is the resistor wiring kit what DDM calls their Harness? What I have at this point is the 35w slim ballast kit.
Hmmmm DRL are usually your low beams run at half powa. Must admit i'm not that familiar with Outback headlights. A bulb behind the orange lens should just be signal or parking lights not DRL. Very easy to disable DRL- http://www.wrxtuners.com/forums/f93/how-disable-daytime-running-lights-06-a-10234/ Can't remember exactly what DDM calls their wire harness. Think its a battery harness. The above posts are dead on as well, the previous owner of my car said he just left the low beams on 24/7 and he never had a problem. I turned them off and that started all my troubles.
Ok, thanks. I'll disable the DRL and just keep the low beams on all the time and see if I have any other problems. Sounds like a harness is a likely purchase if the future...
