a home brew store just opened up in richfeild on lyndale and 60th across the street from bachman's called Northern brewer just thought i would let you all know =)
Thursday - Picked up 6 extract kits and 4 extra fermenters on Thursday of last week. Operation "pipeline defibrillator" should commence this week. 10 gallons Sierra Pale Ale 10 gallons Power Pack Porter 10 gallons Bavarian Wheat Then wracking these on to the associated yeast cakes: 10 gallons IIPA on the Pale 10 gallons Barley Wine on the Porter
wow that sounds pretty epic Ted. I have a spotted cow clone in my basement that I brewed on 12/2. It is sitting around 58-60 degrees, wrapped in a plug in seedling heat mat. Every time I go down to grab it and keg it, I hear it bubble so I wait a couple more days. When should I call it and keg it?
Ted-looks great! Have recipes for the IIPA and Barleywine yet? Scott- I usually let my ales sit for 2 weeks in primary then go to keg, I have yet to have one that didn't finish out in a weeks time. Gasses will continue to bubble out even if it has finished, don't rely on the airlock to tell you if its done. I'm guessing as long as you saw krausen and or witnessed an active fermentation that your beer is finished. If you're still unsure pull a sample and check the gravity.
Oh yeah there was a full krausen, I am not worried about it not being "done" but I too have always had them go super strong for a week and be done
Keg that bad boy up! Where did you get the recipe from? Curious as to how close it is to the real Spotted.
I found it on maybe homebrewchatter, or a different site. It was not on homebrewtalk, I know that much. Here is my hopville link: http://hopville.com/recipe/1053123/saison-recipes/spotted-cow-clone I am also curious how close it is - my wife is a big spotted fan, I am luke warm to it, but its an interesting beer that somewhat defies categorization
Brewed 20 gallons at the same time last Friday (left) Bavarian Wheat extract kits (right) Power Pack Porter extract kits. Heated up my brewing water on Thursday and wrapped with some thermal insulation so I could start right away in the morning. Went from 170 to 150 in 12 hours. Proof of concept, I'll take it! Filling 4 better bottles at the same time, FTW! Time to make a 2nd boil kettle! The HLT worked great as a make-shift kettle, but I think making 30 gallons at once would be a lot of fun.
I recently finished a few gallons of cider and love to make mead, as well, but honey is damn expensive right now. I was thinking about making a sake, too.
The last time I checked for orange blossom it was upwards of $80 for enough honey to brew a fiver. I might be convinced to do a half batch, though. I have access to everything I need to brew and bottle about two gallons right now.
Current activity. Mud Pie Brown Ale off dry hop and now kegged and the Dankness Part 2 still going nuts.
Those look like two mighty gorgeous brews. One of these days i'll have a beer setup...until then it's mead and cider.
Thanks! They surely won't last long. Nothing wrong with mead and ciders, but it doesn't take that much gear on top of what you already have to start brewing . I've made a few meads and a couple ciders. All have turned out well but i'm just a bigger fan of beer.
Yeah, just waiting on the right deal to pop up. I really want to go all-grain right off the bat since it's what I'm used to when doing beer. The guys at Northern Brewer told me that after the holidays I should come by and they would teach me how to make my own on the cheap.
Cool, the Northern Brewer guys won't steer ya wrong. If you have any questions about gear let us know. A lot of us here have had setups small to large and have lots of DIY ideas to share.
Thanks! and if you ever get together for a homebrew day, let me know. I'm always happy to help. I love to brew!
I do all grain with brew in a bag method. The biggest expense is having a keggle so you have enough space. After that, beer is a lot cheaper to make.
Hop rhizomes available for preorder at Midwest Supplies. I'll be growing my first plants on my farm this summer! What's everyone getting? we can have a trade at harvest time.
I'll trade one rhizome of every variety I have(7) for 1 Simcoe rhizome . I'll even throw in a unicorn to sweeten the deal.
Well, the wife clued me in on what my bday present is going to be. The rest of what I need to start home brewing. My house came with a bunch of beer and wine supplies, but don't know what's of any value. At least I have 6-8 glass carboys which I see go for $30-$40 each. Getting excited. Any recommendations for a first brew? I like dark and/or hoppy beer.
Wait, you house came with a bunch of beer and wine making supplies? Thats one way to get a jump into the hobby. I hope my next house comes with a 27 gallon Blichmann conical. How about both dark and hoppy? Like a Black IPA(Cascadian Dark Ale). Will you be brewing extract or all grain? Below are two black ipa offerings from our local shops. I haven't tried either personally but both look like solid enough recipes. Northern Brewer Black IPA kit- http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/black-ipa-extract-kit.html Midwest Supplies Black IPA kit- http://www.midwestsupplies.com/hopstache-black-ipa-w-safale-s-05-11-5-gm-dry-yeast.html Let us know what you go with and what you think of the beer!
Yeah, it's pretty cool. I haven't stumbled upon an product sitting around anywhere. Let's see, I know I've got the carboys, a fermentation bucket, a grape press, and lots of little glass and plastic bits that I don't recognize...yet. Oh and some tubing. That's the one I was looking at already, so good. I think we're heading to Northern Brewer this weekend.
Thats quite the setup to just be left behind. Glass can be sterilized and sanitized, i'd dump all the plastic tubing and buy some new stuff. You never know what might be hiding in those hoses. Unless of course they look new. Post some pictures of the brew when you get around to brewing it!
pksublime - take a few pics of the gear that you have. I'm sure we'll be able to put together a list of what to keep and clean and what will be better to pitch. Also what you may need to get you going. I'd suggest starting with an American Amber. Good, simple, fairly hoppy beer.
I'm sure I'll have a couple Rhizomes for you this spring. I KNOW I'll have plenty of Cascades, a couple Chinook and Centennial.
I’ve got some brewing gear that I’ve not used in a while so before it goes on craigslist, I thought I would see if any of you guys wanted it – or if you know someone who may want it, let me know. 7.5 Gallon stainless Steel Kettle with lid. $50.00 Great condition, very clean, looks almost new. This may be the exact kettle http://www.midwestsupplies.com/home...l-kettle-with-handles-and-lid-7-5-gallon.html
bottling day on my black ipa was on saturday, now i just have to wait out the conditioning time it almost looks purple in the tubing
Looks really good sublime! I've got some insulation that I was planning on using to insulate my MLT keggle but ended up using something else so this roll of insulation needs to get outta my brewery! Plenty to wrap a keg at least 3 times I'd guess. Looking for some Sierra Nevada Pale or Torpedo in cans in trade.
If any of you want to grow hops this year, let me know. I have plenty of Cascade Rhizomes and a few Chinook. MNSubaru discount - cost per rhizome $1.69 and a warm can of Pigs Eye.
Anyone in need of a burner? Got one that needs a home. http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/for/2921156745.html
