This is the 2nd time my hood has popped open while driving on a windy day and at high speed. It backs off from fully retained to the first latching point. I have a difficult time getting the hood to fully latch again. A year ago when this first happened, I took it to the dealer. They greased the latch and it worked ok again. They said sometimes it needs to be re-greased. What a pain in the ass. Doesn't make me feel very safe. Maybe its time for hood pins. Anybody else have this probelm? Vila '02 WRX w/STI airscoop
Ok, I'll fess up.. I had it happen to me once. I didn't shut the hood all the way down. It happened right when I got onto the highway when I hit about 50mph. Pulled on the side of the road and closed it all the way. Never happened to me again.
My 02 has done the same. Left the oil change place and was on my way to meet the guys for the Duluth Trip. 65mph, boom the hood pops up and catches the secondary latch or whatever. Scared the crap out of me! When you close your hood, give a pull or two up on it. Mine would come loose by hand until it latched properly. Sometimes it would take a try or three. But, I haven't had it happen since.
ohhhhh ouch!. The glass kinda looks like eyes tho.. and the hood is its open mouth. EATING YOUR HAND!
Well, in Billie's case, the hood latch failed due more than likely to shoddy workmanship. In the other listed cases, the second latch catch caught the hood. So more than likely it didn't break the windshield.
When I had my 02 WRX i always thought this was gonna happen. It shook so much at highway speed. I always was looking at it out of the corner of my eye.
make sure your primary latch is adjusted properly, and there is a slight amount of slack in your release cable. It can also happen when you zip-tie other crap to the cable, at highway speeds the induced drag can pull the cable to open the latch. If all else fails, get some hood pins.
While I understand your concern, you must understand that this is really a point of pride for a rally bred car. This is from Wikipedia: In 1967 Timo Mäkinen became true rallye legend when pictures of the madcap Finn driving his Mini at a furious speed through Ouninpohja - with the car's bonnet open. Leather straps holding bonnet were not thoroughly tightened and they opened after few rough bounces. He tried to put his head out from the side window but his his helmet was too big and he could only put his head halfway out. So he had to skid the car sideways continuously to see the road ahead. Even so Mäkinen was third fastest on that special stage and he also won the entire rally.
I had the hood open a few years back, I just had my whole car painted and the hood flew open. The hood broke the windshield, cracked the dash and dented the roof all up. Now I put hood pins in all my cars.
I used to drive around with my hood popped (on the safety latches) when my car wasnt intercooled, nothing ever happened tho lol. isnt it kind of unlikely to have your hood pop up and not catch the safety latches? maybe im wrong but it just seems so unlikely......
