I'm fairly new to subarus and I'm looking into a 1999 2.5rs which has some seal missing in the engine and it makes a "bird chirping" noise only when accelerating. What could this be? The car only has 57k original miles on it. He's asking $6400. Is it worth it? Let me know what you guys think.

its off a craigslist ad, so i don't think either the OP or the car owner knows what seal is missing.

well here's what i would do if i was spending that much money
    1) Go to kbb.com and nada to figure out if the price is right, even check ebay.
    2) Find a shop/dealership someplace that would look over the car for you, if the seller is not willing to let you take it to a mechanic walk away. The shop will probably charge you, but for peace of mind its worth it.
    3) If its something easy, haggle a little on price, if its major either walk away or haggle to no end especially if the owner is with when you have it checked over, then he will know the cost of the repair(s).
    4) Enjoy new car, or continue looking for said new car.

I saw the ad, if you ask me 6400 is too high for a 99 rs, even with low original miles. If I remember correct from the ad there's rust starting as well..and it's never just surface rust with GC's is it :(

It all depends on the seal. If it is one of the seals around say a spark plug wire you could get by temporarily with out it, but if it is a cam seal you shouldn't even start it.

If you can get a pic of where the seal should go we can probably tell you what it is and how important.
