I am looking at buying a 1996 outback wagon...hell of a deal. it needs the rear struts replaced. How much are the struts? Labor for the install? Can I install them myself? blue book is $3,500 and the guy is asking $1700 for the wagon with 143,000 miles on it. http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/ram/ctd/1356571808.html good deal??
Im not sure what the struts would cost, but if you were a MNSOC member, you could buy them at 20% off at Morries. (I can help you with that ) As far as the install, I assume they may not be a whole lot different than an impreza (someone correct me if Im wrong) And after seeing Scuba Steve do it, I was able to do the swap on my own in my garage with hand tools. But, I had previous experience with doing swaps on my Hondas. which is harder IMO
hmm alright. I am pretty mechanically inclined so I am sure that I could do it. I am trying to find out part numbers and costs.
Check the coolant overflow for sludge and oil, I bet it needs headgaskets too. Unless its a manual, which would make it a 2.2, and you wouldnt need to worry about it. EDIT: by vin it comes up as a 2.5, yet he says it has a 2.2.....Somethings smells fishy.
hmmm fishy indeed. I might just have to pass on this one, or at least check it out to see whats up. He might just be an idiot and typed the wrong displacement.
I saw this too... It's been on craigslist and super cheap for a reason. Actually went out and looked at it earlier this week. Someone had actually just taken it out for a test drive by the time I got there. I looked underneath the car and could see a small oil leak dripping. Looks like it was trying to be covered up (The rest of the underbody was recently wiped clean! Could tell from the streaks...)... That was already enough for me... I walked away...
The body looks clean from the pics. If you are good at fixing things I would consider buying it. I just sold my 96 outback for $3,700, but it was in perfect mechanical condition. I can also verify that's it's a 2.5. All 96's were auto's with 2.5's, and manuals were 2.2's.
