So, here's a ghetto ass discovery I made the other day. My intake sounded odder than usual, so I thought maybe there was some crap clogging the filter. Well, there was. It was this:

Not all of that, but about half. Turns out, it was the "bottom" of my airbox!:eek3:

So, I did what anyone else would do who didn't want to fun filterless in the winter.

Curly2k3 is digging through his crap to see if he either has an adapter and cone filter, or a stock airbox to hook me up with, lol. Aren't new cars fun?

Where did you buy this car? That could have resulted in some major damage...

I just got an ad from Morries for a free Service Clinic Inspection... you might want to look into that to make sure there aren't any other "surprises"

I'm afraid that I don't see how that could result in damage?

If some of the tape wound up going into your intake and into the engine it could cause damage.

Is the filter is between the tape and the engine? I can't remember the structure of the filter assembly off the top of my head.

Either way, I wouldn't have been pleased. I would think the dealership inspected the car before hand and would have seen something like that. Maybe not...

It's painters tape, and a little bit of electrical tape......

I bought it from Streetsweeper on here actually. Yes, this was the bottom of the airbox, so the filter was between this and the actual engine intake. I was not pleased, but it could be worse.

Not that I saw, it looked like someone hammed the hell out of it to be honest. I get drilling a hole or two, but 9/10ths of the bottom with a hammer? Eh, it works now, lol.

who the hell is streetsweeper??? I was gone for about a month and had never seen his name before that... I guess this is yet another reason members shouldnt sell cars on here unless they have good post count or are reputable... I may also have a box in my shed somewhere from an 03WRX

Here's a link to the for sale thread. The clutch and clutch fork are replaced now and it runs great, the only issue I have had is the battery being a pile of doo-doo butter (damn Red Top) besides this....Overall, it's been a great car, and is a blast to drive.

    wait.....what?

kinda ghetto. but I don't see why it would be a bit deal, that part of the airbox is not exposed to the wheel well or anything, so it's not like the filter will get dirty much faster. The system is still sealed between filter and the rest of the engine.

That's what I was saying. It was the BOTTOM of the airbox, so the filter stopped the tape crap from getting pulled into the engine. I would prefer to not have the entire bottom of the airbox non existent, just in case something were to make it's way up there that could screw up the K&N that's in there......There isn't a lot of protection there obviously, but it's better than nothing.

On the funny side, I came out to this under my wiper after work today:
