I would like to R&R the gear shift knob, but it didn't immediately unscrew as I assumed, and didn't want to apply undue torque before soliciting advice from the gurus.

Is there a trick to removing the Momo knob, so I can replace it with the stock one?

Is it a REAL momo shift knob? Or is the EBAY allen screwed in shift knob?

It's the REAL deal ... have original package from previous owner ... would like to remove when I visit the car at Insurance Auto Auction before sale.

Momo shift knob matches the Momo steering wheel, which I believe was stock in 02 WRX wagon (correct me if I'm wrong)

If it is the real subaru/momo shift knob then it will just unscrew normally. Undo the boot and start twisting.

MoMo shift knobs were not a stock feature.

What I meant was the Momo steering wheel was stock, the shift knob as aftermarket addition by previous owner ... which I may want to keep for install in future.

    Thanks for the info Bielke55.

    Asusming it looks like this?
    http://www.subaruxtras.com/subaru/images/momoshiftknobmt.jpg

I have one that looks the same, but is not threaded for Subaru.
It uses the allen screw to anchor.
(genuine Momo, but not the genuine Subaru/Momo.)
Only apparent difference is the sticker on top.

Is there a small hole anywhere around the base that could take an allen wrench?
If it has the set screw and you try to twist it off you could really mess things up...

Correct, austinpike: no sticker on top. Not sure if it's even worth it to salvage the MoMo gear shift, or just let it go with the car to the salvage auction
