So today I was driving (94 impreza wagon, 5sp) and i heard a small thudding sound around the area of my feet, I didnt think anything of it because I figured it was just a piece of ice or something. 10 min later I get to a friends house and park, pull up the e-brake and went inside, when I came out less than 15 min later I put the e-brake down, put it in reverse and had some trouble getting it moving (like the e-brake was stuck on). I got it out of his driveway and put it in 1st, thats when I realized that my back right and front left wheels were not going to budge. The other two went off spinning on the snow/ice on the road, but the other two will not move. No matter what. If anyone has any idea how I can get my car to roll again it would be very appreciated -Kevin
Easiest way to find the issue is to just start pulling the stuck wheels apart. I have pulled brakes apart on friends cars in grocery store parking lots when they were locked up, some times you just have to do it where it happens.
So after finally getting my car into the garage (it moved for a few min this morning) and taking the rear right tire off, I think I have determined that the right rear drum brake had seized stuck on :unamused: Would this explain why my front right tire doesnt want to move either? Also, does anyone know how much it would be to get both of the rear drums and shoes replaced?
depends on if you can do the work yourself, getting the parts shouldn't run you too much money,drums/shoes and if you can get the "rebuild" kit or whatever its called with all the springs will save you a ton of time in the long run, so it doesn't happen again.
A quick check looks like ~$50/Drum and ~$25/Set from the local Auto Parts store... Replacing drum brakes are not too bad. Not as easy as disc brakes, but do-able in my opinion...
yeah, thats probably why the front wont turn, if one rear is locked the center dif is keeping the front one from turning. also, see if you can adjust the star wheel down and get the drum off, u might not need new drums and shoes, it could be a broken spring or cable... This is exactly why i hate drum brakes (100 year old technology on new vehicles)! Remember, if u do replace parts on ur own, do one side at a time so u can remember where all the right parts go (trust me on this)!... Or, convert to rear calipers! GL If u do need to take it to a shop contact me, I'll get u a good deal
Bummer kev, that wagon has just been pretty tough on ya. I would look into just upgrading to rear disks. If you're gunna pay to fix something, you might as well pay a little more to upgrade it that's been my game plan lol
well after towing it to tires plus it turns out the springs that retract the shoes back were broken, both of them. it is all better now  I just have to go back to the cities to pick it up mods can lock this/do what they will with it. thanks everyone for the ideas/suggestions
