So my bug eye started leaking oil about 3 months ago, and I'm not sure where its coming from. It seems to be oil pan or maybe between engine and trans. I know there are a few places in the rear of the engine that can leak. Is my only option to pull the engine or trans. To find the leak. Or Does anyone have experience with any of those gaskets leaking and know for sure which one it could be? Only mods : 2nd cat removed Short ram air All performed by pervious owner Thanks for any insite. Josh
Without having a picture to work with im going to guess its one of the following: front main seal (crank seal), oil pump seal, or the oil cooler gasket. Could be any or all of these.
Is it easier to drop the trans than lift the engine? Also if I replace the rear access cover gasket , what else should I replace since I'll have access to the rear of the motor. Rear main seal?
if you are going to be that car into it and have the funds id replace clutch and flywheel n it as well
Anyone have experience dropping a transmission and want some extra cash? I am good with a wrench and want to learn/ help. So if this peaks any interest pm me Thanks Josh
I've been through the proceedure many times on my Wrx so I know all what needs to be done just never did it on my own #becauselazy
Just curious why you are needing to pull trans? In my opinion unless the trans is broken it's easier to pull the motor to get at the clutch, rear seals, etc. And actually, you are disturbing less components, no tugging on axles, dropping exhaust, driveshaft, and so on...
You see , that's my problem. One guy says, drop the trans and another guy says pull the engine... so confused. So with all this confusion, is there anyone that would help find the leak and come up with a plan to fix it ?
I can take a look at the leaking no sweat. Is it a trans leak or an oil leak...i might have missed that.
Ok so I'm having some trouble searching for what gaskets and seals I should replace. I'm going to buy a clutch, timing belt w/ water pump, front and rear main seal, rear access cover and wrist pin oring. Also the oil pan gasket. Is there any other gaskets or seals I should get?
I'm going to have @yuseforester take a look. I'll get his opinions on what I should do. I appreciate everyone's comments and ( unlike some people) I'll take then into consideration.
I met with @yuseforester yesterday. So he slapped a lot of sense into me and saved me a ton of time and money. ! Long story short, he explained how a valve gasket leak can look like a leak from the rear of the engine. So I'm not going to remove the engine and go gasket crazy... I'm going to replace the valve cover gaskets and spark plugs while I'm there. He also talked about my turbo and the under hood temps on the passenger side of the engine. Yusef is an awesome guy, learned quite a bit in the 30 min conversation. He understood I am still learning about subaru and offered me help if I need it.
Thanks guys, I'm flattered. Josh, it was nice to meet you and I think you will be ok with some general maintenance, which is pretty common for the age/mileage/duty cycle of your car. The fact that you didn't have any oil on the timing covers is really good! Clean everything up, reseal the valve covers and see what we have left for leaks (if anything). This is the most affordable and sesnisble place to start. Let me/us know how it goes!
It can be really helpful in situations like this to clean all the old sludge off the areas in question (not powerwashing but with a degreasing solution) and then drive for a couple weeks keeping an eye on where the oil seeps start coming back...
Do they make gaskets? Must felpro or something...didn't even know that. Rtv is the way to go imho, just make sure you get the old stuff off without spilling any into the crank case! Not that you need to do that Josh, just a general comment on oil pan gaskets I think.
