i'm running a 400 watt power inverter to power up my laptop, and I think I fried the cigarette lighter power on my 2002 wrx. I checked the fuses on the bottom left side of the driver wheel. they look fine. i think i fried the circutry. The connector behind the Cig lighter probably melted and created an open circuit if thats the case, any suggestions? any recommendations or ideas?
I checked the inverters fuse and I even plugged in my radar detector, my radar detector gets no power, i'm going to do a full check again of all the fuses.
Double check your fuse, put a new one in there and see first. Sometime a fuse might look fine on the outside but actually is toast in the inside. GL
Nope, there's a resistor or whatever it is on the back of the power socket that just melts/goes bad under load. Had the same thing happen at way lower loads (running tire air pump). Took the socket out, thrown resistor away and an insulator ring, put it back and it works. Now my only protection is a fuse though.
Ok, I found the problem and it was the resistor on the back of the power socket of the cigarette lighter that just went bad. The good thing is that I found the problem, the bad thing is that i'm having issues taking out the cigarette lighter plug from the dash frame, any recommendations besides brute force and ripping the metal out of the cigarette lighter, and i think i might need a new cigarette lighter, anybody know where I can get a new one.
That resistor isn't a separately available part. Sorry. You would either need to find one at Radio Shack, or buy a new lighter socket.
ok guys, i got it all fixed up, thanks for the help and thanks for the detailed pictures, nice job on the detailed pictures.
