That's been the big complaint that I've heard about FIOS is their customer service. But the uber-nuts internet speeds and less-compressed-than-anyone HD would be enough for me to deal with crappy service people.
It is definitely on Comcast's end. Just doing speed tests, it picks the closest test point that is not ANYWHERE near where we are. Most times it is southeast or southwest. They have rolled out trucks 2-3 times and do the same crap. First they blame the computer. Then they blame the router. Then they blame the modem (it is my modem). After we keep swappingout all these parts, it keeps happening. No matter what gets hooked up to my cable line, it comes up. Now I have just set the google pref to english and forget about it, but if I ever clear my cache, it is back. It all started when they open up the new set of ip's. My ip has changed 6-7 times now, and before I had the same IP for 5 years. As for keeping port 80 open, yes they do. If I want to be able to connect to my home server, I can get on through 80. Russ
I can confirm Comcast allows incoming on port 80. I run several servers 24/7 using dynamic dns so that my domain name can follow my potentially changing IP (it doesn't change unless I leave the modem unplugged for many hours at least). I have incoming on several ports and it all works fine. I've also gone through periods where I've had my upload bandwidth completely maxed for months straight. Right now I'm about 16 hours into a massive download (Mitchell OnDemand 5.8 1st Quarter 2008 and some other goodies) and I'm still getting a rock-solid 10+Mbps. My buddy just moved up to Brainerd, and when he was looking for a place to live he had to make sure it was within the Charter service area for 20Mbps fibre internet. And that's 20Mbps down AND 20Mbps up - for like $110 a month. Unbeatable.
agreed. even with the BS i might go back to them. just don't do anything likely to cause a problem, like change or cancel your service.
