So I have this small 2000lb ATV winch sitting around and it has always been my dream to put a winch on my car and it might fit now, but I'm concerned if the bumper beam is strong enough. I haven't looked at it too hard yet, but i was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this. It would be mounted in the center either on top or bottom of the beam using either u-bolts or some long bolts all the way through. Any thoughts would be great, thanks.
The front screw in tow hook is only attached to the beam (but it is right over where the beam attaches to the frame). I also added a tow hook to the beam on the opposite side of the oem one also by where it bolts to the frame. Both of these points have taken more than 2000lbs (pulling the car sideways out of ditch). It should be strong enough but I would consider mounting it closer to the bumper-to-frame attachment
Sweet, that's actually a good idea if I mounted it on the other side of the oem tow point so if I needed more pull than the winch could do, I could loop it around a tree or somthing and attach the hook to the tow point and it would pull both rails. Thanks
what about mounting it in the trunk bolting it to the frame? i have a friend that did that in his toyota. that way when you go into the ditch you can winch it out from the back!!!
That's stage 2. I'm looking at getting a trailer hitch and making it mount to that, but I need another reason to get a trailer hitch other than just a winch that I will only use a few times. How did your friend mount his winch in the trunk, is it literally in the trunk and there's a hole for the cable or is it underneath somehow. What kind of a toyota?
he cut into the floor of the trunk near where the spare tire would be and welded a brace onto the frame then welded the hole shut. i believe he cut a hole behind the license plate and has a weather proof latch and a hinged license plate. i can vouch that it will pull the car out of a ditch with snow up to the windows
