"And then people wonder why people buy extended warranties! Good thing everything worked out good for you." - 02_Rexxxy ?

I think he was just commenting on how some people scoff at paying for warranties.

Mike is a straight up guy. My wife and I have another kid on the way, and she has been eyeballing the 7 passenger Tribeca for years. The FXT is looking a little small when factoring in another carseat. At this point Minnetonka may have won us over with a sale. We'll see. Other Subaru dealers may have honored the warranty just as well, but everyone at Minnetonka has been good people so far. I like dealing with good people.

Stopped in to the shop to drop off the Killer B oil pickup. Talked a bit with Mike about timing. Sounds like I may get my car back next Wednesday or Thursday.

Just talked to Mike at Minnetonka Subaru. Sounds like it could be up and running in an hour or two. He said they may keep it over night for a cold start in the morning, but everything has been going smooth so far. I'll update again when I have it at home.

You're lucky they got it covered having a tune done. Any time we have a turbo motor have a failure under warranty, the first thing subaru wants is for us to check the CID (computer id number) which will change from the predetermined number if flashed

They could of turned it down, and I suppose somewhere else may have if I would have gone to a different dealer. Mike said when they took the block apart there were no signs of abuse. The bearings most likely failed at some point. I stopped driving it when I started to hear the noise. Than, I babied it to a couple places before leaving it at the Minnetonka Subaru.

Subaru knows there is a hobbiest community around their cars. I am a happy customer knowing they could have turned me away due to modifications, but instead ponied up.

IME this has less to do with Subaru and more to do with the dealership. Good on minnetonka subaru. Glad everything worked out for you.

To an extent. The regional Subaru Rep was the one that came by and ok'd it. They also took pictures of the disassembled short block. Definitely +1 to Mike and the guys at Minnetonka Subaru for being on my side of the fence, though.

Ok, so 400 miles in and the engine is great. Monday midday I started to hear an odd whirring noise from possibly the bell housing. It was more noticeable when the clutch was disengaged. I took note of it, and when it carried into the evening I called 'tonka Subaru to set up an appointment, as they did replace my clutch/flywheel when I had my short block replaced. Tuesday morning I heard what sounded like a piece of metal shooting around a crockpot and than dissapear. I was able to make the last hundred yards or so back to my garage with what seemed like a normal drive except for the same whirring, and again called 'tonka. I admitted I may just be paranoid, but that it did sound like it was coming from the bell housing. I could still travel through all of the gears as usual, and there was no whirring noise or otherwise at idle, only when rolling. I was told it may just be ice falling off from under the car and that unless something like that persists or escalates, I should just wait till my appointment on the upcoming Monday. Hoping that it was simply titanic destroying ice that was careening off of the bottom of my car, I drove it again yesterday. A 1 mile trip in the morning, and the same in the afternoon. The whirring was still there in the afternoon, and than......clunk...clunk, clunk, clunk... ****. I could still travel the gears, and I was able to get up my driveway and haven't touched it since. I called 'tonka last evening, and they got back to me this morning. It is gonna get towed out to 'tonka and hopefully someone can take a look at it today. My intuition tells me something was loose and snapped off in the bell housing. You could push it dead down the road now and hear the metal clunk in rythym with the speed in which you pushed it. Merry Christmas.

I can't say that ice would make that kinda sound and how much ice does one have to have under the car for it to keep happening very often? I get that its cold out, but I dont think that it is the case. Better to be safe then sorry and having them take a look at it. especially if it could be covered under the warranty.

Hope this is just a small easy fix. Hope you have a good holiday, and you get back on the road with no problems!

    Cheers.

Wow, what a nightmare! I just bought my 2011 so I am nervous since this is my first subaru... I don't know what to expect.

Glad to hear that Morries has been accommodating despite being tuned, I've been leaning towards tuning the car the last few days..

Sounds like you have some bad luck!! Hope everything goes well and it isn't a major issue.
Did they say they had to tear into the engine? Or just drop the tranny to see what the noise in the bell housing is?
Or did they determine the noise was not really in the bell housing but from the engine..

They seem to be really busy, and all he heard from the tech was that he needs to drop the transmission for starters.

I suppose, I mean, the seats still seem ok...

I dunno. Like I said I can still travel the gears smoothly, and if something was wrong in the actual transmission I am pretty sure it would be more catastrophic than this. It makes sense in my head that the issue resides in the bell housing and is related to the replacement clutch assembly they installed. If it is a new point of failure, and unrelated to anything else, I am going to be pretty dissapointed.

Even though my original scheduled appointment was this morning I am now told they won't be able to look at it till Thursday at the earliest. Kind of a bummer, but I understand how these things go especially with the holiday's.

Some, but not all of the parts came in today. Should be wrapped up some time tomorrow. Brand new shortblock, clutch assembly, and now a rebuilt center diff, all within 12 month warranties. Not a bad outcome.
