I think trying to keep within 1st ring suburbs is best. OC Roseville JJ's Bar Long Lake These are all 1st ring burbs
I am in favor of anything that is within 2 minutes of a major freeway and has free parking and a large lot. Driving through a bunch of city streets is a huge turn off for me. I'm just not a city person. Same with limited parking.
medicine lake has a nice large parking lot right by the lake, cant be that busy Tuesday nights. right off 394/169. and if it is busy the adjacent lot is the back of a truck warehouse (wide open space)
That would hold water if it wasn't a problem every time I've been there this year and it wasn't hot out yet. I'd love to be wrong about this but I'm pretty sure that venue is boned.
Change the location... Tuesday night meets will die (mark my words!!!)... We've tried this with other meets... Pretty sure that failed... Don't forget the majority of MNSubaru members that regularly attend the Calhoun meets live around there IE: Jordan, Curren, Emily, Pat, and then you have the friends that go out after with them... Jesse, Derp, and me (went I'm not busy) and more... Then there is the "attraction" to that location... Remember Firestone??? Why did that die??? Oh yeah people claim cause the random entertainment is no longer present... Take yoga pants away then I'm just Ghey... Also remember the winter of last April/May??? Can we say stir crazy... I think so... Yesterday was pretty hot outside... I know I was out side from 6am to 7pm doing manual labor... Only one other time this year was it "to busy" for us to use was like the first really nice day and it was kinda hot that day too (and they were having their version of a Travon Martin rally). Our problems will be the same at any lake with a beach... Hot weather equals people in the water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Calhoun is not hard to get to if you're not directionally challenged... And there are alternate routes!!! People scooter in from over 20 miles with NP
So what you're saying is this location is only good for 3-4 weeks out of a given spring and summer season since everyone is "stir crazy" all spring and if it's over 80* you can expect to be overrun by section 8 hoodrats? I've been going to these for three years. Other members much longer than that. This is unusual. I don't think you really believe what you're saying.
ok ladies..here my 2 cents...I was one of the original starters of this meet, and the people who picked this meet/ location lived some what near there and or close-ish. Changing the meet to somewhere north imo is fine with me but I will not attend much if ever, It is a far drive and I will complain because we started at calhoun for the propose of being close to many who attend, access to water, good looking woman (for the guys), shirtless men (for me lol), easy to bike too (yes some people used to bike there). I propose we just kill the meet all together, no one will ever be happy and its going to die anyways because hand raisers. end rant- <3 Ylime.
Personally, I dont think we are going to find a better location. I dont get why people take such issue with Calhoun... If we do change location, how about a central location to appease all people instead of going to a corner of the twin cities? I also suggest keeping it to a park. Most people dont want to spend a ton of money at a bar or restaurant every week. Places that come to mind is Minnehaha Falls (by the disc golf course), Hidden falls, Fort Snelling Park area, Como Lake area, Theodore Wirth Park, Lake Cornelia Park (next to edina water park), Highland Park, etc. I hate to pick a fight but I think the core group of people who show up (not me lately) should have a bigger voice because a lot of people in the forum dont regularly come out on Tuesdays, regardless if its summer or winter locations.
In the end IMO this is how it will go down. Hand raisers will pick a new spot maybe half will show up to the new location. In the mean time the people that are regular and picked Calhoun for a reason will continue to go there and this whole conversation will end up be a pointless waist of everyone's time.
and dont say "well its because its to far away" because after all we love driving our Subaru's as Derek said. I propose keeping it where it is and if its a bro day at the beach just move to the lot on the other side of the lake for one night, one night wont hurt. I don't want to sound mean but if there is enough interest in a meet on the north side, then someone should step up and organize it, let this one be.
This definitely an issue for everyone here. Sure we love driving our Subarus, but I wouldn't call sitting in traffic fun. Like has been mentioned moving it any which direction is going to cause issues for someone. This may be out if the question but would it be that big of an issue to possibly have a couple meets? *gasp* I'm just throwing it out there, if people don't like it so be it. Honestly even if it was at Calhoun I won't be going much. Some meet is better than no meet.
well the problem has been that people coming to the meet end up leaving because there is no where to park..
I just want a nice place to go. I love the eye candy of uptown.... But I also like the cars. The last two trips to Calhoun were lame. Not being able to stand and hang out by the cars is pointless. Not being able to park at all is worse. It's funny that people cry about driving. A lot of us drive 30+ mins to Calhoun. In the past it has always been worth it. However, things change... If Calhoun is no longer group friendly, over run by thugs and patrolled by cops... Why not try something else? It isn't a north vs west thing. Derp made a good suggestion and people spoke up because they liked it. His location is 15 mins from both cities. Either way... Somewhere with a lake and a place to actually park our cars is the idea. Calhoun had become less then desirable because we can't even enjoy the cars... Which is pretty important for a car club. lol There are lots of lakes and I am sure they are good options for us.
Everybody post up their address's and how many times they went last year and I'll mathematically choose a place that will be most convenient for those who would actually go. It will take into account how difficult it is to get to Calhoun from your current location and how many times you went last year and estimate how many times you would go to any other given location to come up with the ideal Tuesday Night Subaru Meet that nobody can complain about.
I'm sure I made it to all the meets but two last year... And then even tried getting university back together!!! If i have everyone beat does it mean that the meet should be at my house then??? If so I'll still be going to Calhoun with the regulars
Alright folks, we're getting into cyclical bickering here... First and foremost is making sure we have consensus on whether Calhoun is dead or not. If it's 1/2 and 1/2 with the regulars then I'm not so sure about closing this thread and picking a new location. First thing is recognizing why people are bitching and not dismissing them as whiners (which is happening on both "sides"). There is a problem with that location that's new to this year. It isn't a discussion about drive times to Calhoun, if that's what you're taking from this your reading comprehension sucks. Trying to say there isn't a problem once you actually get there is borderline insulting to the rest of us who have our own eyes and ears. Similarly, saying there is no problem asking members to drive an hour+ to a new location is a little ignorant, particularly when ALL of the people saying that are either exactly as close, or closer to the proposed new location. Perspective. C'mon. Maybe the answer is to spin up a Thursday meet at a different location? Whatever it is, we're going to sit at this impasse if nobody is willing to recognize "the other side" and come up with some ideas to compromise. This is a "by the members, for the members" event and while my vote is to move because I'm not interested in watching T&A when I have to spend most of the night making sure my car doesn't get jacked, it's not fair to foist a new direction on people if that's not what they want. If we're really 1/2 and 1/2 split, maybe it's time for someone to spearhead a new weekly that isn't on Tuesday? Better to have two small meets that make sense for their respective attendees than have one small meet that alienated half the group.
Exactly Em, I hosted quite a few meets at my house in SLP. Used to have 20-30 cars on my block back in the day. Neighbors LOVED it. I agree with this post 100% I vote Long Lake for now. It will suck for some of us because of the construction on 694, but there is ways around it. I mean, getting to Calhoun sucks because of traffic. So what's the difference. It can be just a trial. If its that bad, we find somewhere else to go. It's not the end of the world, its just a car meet. Not like we're curing cancer here
we could do calhoun on tuesday and long lake thursday?? or where ever else anyone would want to go...
HA! no kidding. I think the same damn sunglasses too! And i havent worn those for a year or so. I forgot my main pair at work. Damn I have to go shopping for new clothes.
You cooked meat on three fridays and when the Assistant Manager of Firestone gave you a hint of grief, you went all chicken****. Even after we told you that Milbern owned the lot, you said you'd handle it and that we should stay away till you do and it went nowhere. You do realize Milbern is open 5 days a week right, they have pretty normal business hours. Next time we have permission to be somewhere and another person says "you can't be here." You pull your dick out of your purse and you place it in his hand and tell him where and how far he can shove it. That whole debacle last year with your simpering, tail between the legs defeatism makes my blood boil.
Any spot would be boring if all there is to do is people watch or talk about what's under the hood or wheels. Any sport or activity to get people togeather and have fun would be a lot better than people watch or talk what's under the hood. Maybe I'm getting old but I don't want to talk about cars or people watch, any sport activity and I would come more often. Some of us aren't into people watching or talking cars/mods/wheels if that's all there is to do
You know I still wouldn't mind a people watching meet and "car talking" meet. But I like the idea of getting some sports activites going within our community. i.e Soccer, hockey,football.....etc
We just need to be more annoying than everyone else to drive them away, blast our music, do burnouts, drive fast, honk our horns, rev our engines, shout obscenities (wait, dean has that one covered), parallel park across the spots or just not let anyone else into the parking lot, hit on every decent looking chick (oh wait, dean has that one covered too), then our problem will be solved!
what??? you dont want to wear matching tea shirts, bond as a group, drink beers together afterwards, kick some balls???? what a shame.
Well the perennial bitching has begun! Seems like this happens every year, but we still end up at Calhoun. CLIFFS: -I attend, so I should have a say -I like Calhoun, but I'm open to other places -We might pick up new members at a new place -Let's have a thread to vote. (Mods, get on that ) Although my attendance has been poor at the last few meets due to work travel, I still make it a point to go. I've always enjoyed Tuesday meets as a time to "geek out" and talk about cars, catch up with fellow members, etc. As a resident of Uptown, I too find it a pain in the ass to make it to Calhoun. However, I still enjoy the Calhoun venue. At the same time, I do enjoy DRIVING my Subaru, so I'm definitely open to new places. To make it easy for all, I agree that it should be a central location, and a consistent location. Keeping it at a park would be preferable to me. Those that enjoy the meets will attend. If its central and easy to get to, we might even pick up some new attendees that have been commenting here, but chose not to attend because Calhoun in a pain to get to. (I used to live outside of uptown and used to get soooo confused getting there!) Here's what I propose: let's have a mod gather the top choices of a new venue and have a vote. Majority rules, that's it. Or we can keep bitching, argue about location, and probably kill the meet all together.
Why do I get the feeling I'll be able to simply quote my last post for the next few pages? I'm staying out of it at this point. Since you all seem intent on refusing to listen to and/or give any ****s about each other, I'm going to put my energy into getting behind Jason to bootstrap Fridays and I'll make it over to Calhoun once I've heard confirmed, reliable, consistent reports that there are no longer serious problems with the location for several weeks. I don't see a mod "forcing" the issue here with a poll or whatever. Figure it out among yourselves.
Sorry, I didn't get a chance to read through every post. Whatever the cause, it doesn't seem that Calhoun is working so well recently. I don't care if you don't want to get involved, but I still propose a vote. I'd organize one, but I gots work to do!
That's what I'm driving at. Putting together a new thread to solicit locations has already been suggested and your post contained nothing to suggest you have any clue what the actual objection is. Read. Comprehend. THEN post. Complete and utter unwillingness to bother reading and then actually consider what others are saying is why I'm bowing out. I can't help you guys if you're not willing to at least give each other that much courtesy.
I can't help but be an asshole here and ask, what's so enjoyable about driving in rush hour traffic to you guys? I absolutely loathe stop and go traffic. But I guess if you enjoy it more power to you! Again I won't be going to meets unless I move more north again, so my opinion shouldn't count for anything. I just want to say lets remember you guys are talking about a group meet. Not a few buddies hanging out close to home.
I haven't been to a Tuesday meet in almost two months, but one of the last ones I was at was rough (way too many people and the cops were being unfriendly). If that is how it's been since then, I definitely understand why people want to change venue.
