OEM turbo has leaking oil return line on '02 WRX Wagon which is normal from the research I have done and want to confirm if it is necessary to REMOVE Turbo to replace this rubber hose. If necessary to remove Turbo then this is a 3 hour job from the quote I have and doing it myself would be really long and painful.

    Thanks.

You should be able to replace the rubber hose with out removing the turbo. Might have to remove the down pipe.

Yeah, if you remove dthe downpipe, you should be able to get at it from the bottom without removing the turbo.

Thanks. I need to put some exhaust gaskets on the DP back anyway so will work this in. Pre-UP is now gasketed so I will not pass out when the car is not moving.

    Specific Hose Size Needed....

What is the hose inside and outside diameter for turbo oil return line? Would like to purchase hose from local autostore before I start. Understand the ID is the most critical but not sure of the pressure this line is supposed to withstand. Doubt it is high pressure while I am a newbie so cut me some slack.

Also, assuming hose clamps are securing this hose so will buy these as well and if I am wrong then please let me know.

    Thanks again...

Pretty much no pressure on the oil return. It pretty much just falls out the turbo back into the pan.

here's a picture with the turbo removed. As mentioned, you DO NOT need to take off the turbo to do this, but removing the downpipe will make life easier.

and yes....there's no pressure within the line.

I wanna say it's 5/8 or 3/4 works, but I can't remember off hand. I use Weatherhead, and it works great. Don't use heater hose, as it will soak up oil and puff up.

This is one of the most PITA things to get to on your engine. I don't know how the hell anybody thinks you're going to get at it without taking the turbo off.

bah....car on ramps, get under the car and it can be done. I've done a few. Yes, they can be a PITA...but I've had them on in as little as 30 seconds as well.

Definitely don't need the turbo out.

    Thanks for the input everybody.

SS, the detailed pictures are very much appreciated.

    this minor leak.
