Developed some whining/howling/rubbing coming from the left front wheel today at the end of the fun run. Most noticeable when turning right.

Bill already suggested a wheel bearing as a suspect. 07 WRX wagon, 32k miles, never tracked/Auto/Rally/Xed. 95% freeway cruising miles.

    Thanks in advance

Did you put it in reverse to shake out any possible rocks on the caliper?

It might go away if you clean some of that fail out of your car.

But seriously, it could be a wheel bearing. Its kind of hard to say what it is without hearing it myself, but what you describe hints at a bearing.

Does the sound change with speed as well?

Meh, my shaggenwagon has a couple of howling wheel bearings. I've just been too lazy to fix them. They are annoying though.

I would say wheel bearing as well. although it is kinda weird it doing it with the little bit of wear on the car.

The sound really comes on when the car is laterally loaded in a RH turn. Suppose I can avoid it by e-braking and counter steering every RH turn...

Sounds like a winning plan to me. Watch out for the fuzz though.

Are you sure its coming from the right side? It can be really tricky to tell sometimes, and I've been fooled before thinking it was from one side when it was the other. Shops usually have a stethoscope thing and the put a transducer on all the hubs so they can listen to them and compare. I forget what its called.

i had a loose axel nut recently that was fixed by retightening with an air tool.

everything sounded similar to what you were explaining

yeah typically it is the opposite side of which way you are turning.....

I owuld look at it for you, but apparently last time we exchanged on this forum you said I was brain-dead so I guess I have no ability to diagnose it for you ;)

Warranty should take care of that for you though... ;)

Sorry if I wasn't clear. The sound appears to be coming from the left front wheel and is most noticeable in RH turns. Thanks everyone for your feedback.

yep.. sounds like a bearing then... especially seeing as it would be loaded when turning the opposite way.... (typically anyways)

that would sound like a wheel bearing to me also, maybe it was on its way out and got pushed over the edge on the fun run.

Hmmph. Is there a "typical" amount of use when one can expect seeing this or might I just have a bum bearing? I put almost 60k on my 02 WRX wagon and it required nothing other than oil and gas...

joy of cars my friend.... its like some guys get all the hassles and others have dream cars that never fail....

its a part that rotates a lot and fast.. some give up the ghost quicker I guess... all it takes is a small deformity in one of the bearings inside to pre-maturely wear something out... and soemtimes y ou can drive another xxxxxxxK before it breaks.. but dont.. ha ha

    Cat Killer

He probably just hit the neighbors cat who is probably still stuck to the sway bar since this is the only way he can get any p*ssy. Could not resist this one!

i have this problem as well. it originally came from a loose axle nut, like 2.5rs said. but since i listened to everyone on this forum i changed out my wheel bearing for nothing, and tore my cv boot in the process. now i have a whole new mess of problems. coulda been fixed by a simple tighten.
