not a whole lot, although the 5mt on the legacy seems to be a bit stronger then most give it credit for, but the 5eat rules either way.

Is there a big difference in how the power is put to the wheels?

The steering wheel shifting is terrific on the 5eat and will go all the way to redline. I wish the the shifts were quicker...but hey, I'm not driving a Ferarri I remind myself.

Do they all come with the paddle shifters?

The biggest complaint is the shift timing and the rev matching, otherwise it feels like it puts torque down just as well as the 5MT.

The 5MT on my LGT is much tougher than the 5MT build on my 99 RS. Even without the aftermarket clutch parts the LGT grabs quicker and doesn't slip as much when dumping.

Yes, all the 5MT on the LGTs come with paddle shifters. It also has a gear selector LED on the gauge cluster that I wish was on the 5MT.

You meant to say 5eat when you were talking about paddles right? :)

man, you change your mind more than a kid before christmas. who cares what you get, 5eat vs.manual, neither will help your driving skills. ;)

I've driven both, and if I was to buy one it would be the 5eat, cause you get the care free driving (with an auto) and the paddle shifting is fun!

however, are you going to modify it? what are your goal if you bought a legacy?

I want subtle yet flashy, performance yet comfort, the list goes on. I want a sunroof, kinda want leather, something bigger, and mostly something more elegant. I was very fond of Bikerboy's all black LGT although I would want some color rather than all black. Was thinking either blue's and some dark bronze rims.

in theory, you lose about 25 percent of your crank horse to the wheels with an auto, vs about 15 with a manual.

when I did my auto to manual swap my car felt like it had alot more power just being a manual.

Didn't like how the 5EAT felt.
    Shifts are slow, etc.

The 5MT isn't exactly the world's best transmission, but it beats the 5EAT IMHO.
Now, if it's the 6 speed in the spec, then it's a no-brainer.
You could try driving one. :)
    (Not mine)

A slushbox by design has more loss in it. The AT also weighs about 70lbs more.

Auto=more mod money to making auto trans stronger after mods over time

    manual=just replacing clutch after mods

depending on which is cheaper in the long run, I think a/t stuff can get $$$$

Well, first off, you won't look as cool to the ladies without a manual. I have it on good record that "chicks dig manuals."

Other then that, some additional drivetrain loss and extra weight with the AT.

Honestly, it's just a different driving experience when you have to shift. I'm not sure I'll ever buy an automatic car.

sorry greg but you are dead wrong....maybe if it was 6mt vs 5eat, but the 5eat will handle more power then the 5mt could ever dream of in stock form, and would cost less to modify to handle even more power..

And still shift like an old man getting his **** out...

STS on the 5MT may be dangerous but it spits through gears well. 6MT is even better.

That is not what's happening on LGT.com
5eats are generally needing tq converters and valve bodies before the the 5 speed needs anything except maybe a clutch (and there's doubts as to whether it "needs" the clutch)
The 5MT in the legacy is not seeing failures until people get into the quite large turbos (or if they drive like morons, but that would happen stock). The 5 speed in the legacy seems quite a bit beefier than the one in the WRX.

The gears in the LGT are quite a bit wider than even the '04+ WRX gears. Doing an LGT gear swap is becoming a pretty common mod for the WRX crowd who doesn't want to drop >$4k on a gearset that is complete overkill.

yeah, that could be a problem. I never launch so that's no worry, but I do love those 1-3 gear pulls:yumyum:

One minute you want a big turbo, the next minute you want to sell the car, etc etc, etc.

I went through that. Got the turbo RS, got the Haltech E6K in it, ran it for a year, got rid of it for the LGT. Once you're in the Stage 2 LGT you won't want to mess with that stuff anymore. One of my VPs rode with me to a company outing and thought I just had a car with a nice interior with leather and the snrf but then I got on the onramp and wound it up. Now I think he wants one. What was it that Maxim said about the LGT? A ninja in business clothes or something?

well, after reading I'm not sold on the 1-2 or 1-4 lgt gear swap. It's very attractive for the peeps that needs slightly stronger and better gears, but as I seen it the big advantage of the lgt gears are the 1-2 ratios, not the ability to hold big power.

I know the transmission, whether it's the stock wrx 04+ or lgt will hold gobs of power if handled carefully, but I personally don't want to drive around knowing IF I mess up a shift while piling on the power that I could strip a gear.

So, back to the thoughts or a ppg or 07 sti transmission. With ppg prices continuing to climb, unfortunately it looks like the 07 sti transmission is the best bang for the dollar.

    research continues.
