Does anybody have any recommendations for machine shops that can look over my heads and set lash? Located in the metro area.
I would think that JMA could do that in Osseo. If you need them machined...Metro Engine Sevice in New Brighton. Dave is the man, usually swamped with work, but the man!
One again, THE ONLY place to go is cylinder head express in Isanti! It is the only place that I have ever received consistently good work from!!! He has modern equipment, a clean shop, and good turn around time. They can fix things other shops throw away. I took my BMW heads to a specialist and they lasted a whole 1,500 miles. Then I took them to Justin at cylinder head express. He replaced the exhaust seats and valves. The BMW factory valve are stainless and cost $80 EACH! Justin found me modern stelite faced valves for 7 BUCKS! Since he has fixed them, I have about 50,000 miles on it, I have NEVER had to adjust the valves!!! (I check them once a year). I was told my WRX needed new heads because of cracks. He removed all of the seats, welded up the cracks, replaced the seats, and put steel spark plug inserts in, so they wouldn’t crack again. I now work at a place where we hot rod old British sports cars. We used to use a nationally know racing engine builder, for cylinder head work. Because our heads are not from a Chevy/ford/mopar, they would come back with all kinds of poorly done, inconsistent work. Valve stems at all different heights, stacks of spring shims, you name it... Justin brings these heads back to the way they are supposed to be, and fixes engineering problems, by modernizing things. He is a production shop, that will still work with you on a “one off” project. I CANT SAY ENOUGH GOOD THINGS ABOUT HIM!!!
Thanks guys. I dropped the heads off with Dave at Metro Engine Service last week. JMA declined to work on them since I had opted out of using them to finish up my build a week earlier. They were acting a little butt hurt in any communication after that. Thanks again for the info.
You won’t be disappointed with the final product from Metro. I’m guessing that JMA doesn’t want the liability of not finishing the build. RS Motors didn’t want to build my motor unless i let them do all of the work AND tuning.
Yep, as mentioned in our email conversation, we either want to assume ALL liability or none. We would rather make no money then a little bit and have our hands on someone else's project unfortunately. Nothing against you not choosing us to do your whole project. Just our policy choice with how busy we get and a way to avoid head aches. We have seen a customer not torque cam caps correctly and break a camshaft in half and MAP had to eat the costs to fix it just to keep him happy. Among dozens of other things that get towed in that we have to fix and find. So we just keep our hands out of others cookie jars. Dave will take great care of you. He does excellent work! Have fun with the project, it's always fun assembling a engine and the final product will bring you tons of satisfaction and joy!
Also, with the amount of people that contact us on a daily basis, it gets hard to keep up at times. I sometimes get short phrased with people and overwhelmed. I do all I can to keep up!
I understand completely. Thank you for taking the time to clarify and explain the reasoning. I really appreciate it.
