Hi everyone, I thought I would ask this here because everyone knows what I mean by "cold" on here My question is, how long should it take for a normally aspirated 2.5L engine to reach operating temperature in the winter? I live in St. Paul and have a 02' Impreza 2.5 with 127k miles on it and have had it since last spring, but I suspect that its thermostat might be stuck partially open all the time because it takes a long time to reach operating temperature and for the heat to get hot. The thermostat was replaced at 112k miles before I bought it, along with the head gaskets and water pump. Perhaps I am just cold and want to blame the car? Thanks
It will have lots of different variables. Mine has recently been a bitch to get warm, even with a new stat.
I just got a new t-stat but it takes the exact amout of time to warm up as before. but then again, I let it warm up about 30 minutes every morning. so it could be quicker, but i dont think so.
I have an N/A 2.5 and it takes a long time. You can try one trick, start the car and let it idle for 5 minutes (or more) with the fan off. If it's not sucking heat from the engine bay to heat the cabin, it will let the engine warm up a little bit faster.
30 minutes is a long time! - i let mine warm up for 15 mins when it's very cold, and it's usually toasty by then. Jason's car takes longer of course... I do the shut the fan off trick for the whole time, then when I get in the car I i just turn on the heat. My commute is 10 minutes max though
99 2.5rs takes me 10-15 minutes for operating temp..more around the 15 minute mark,but it takes roughly 30 minutes for the heat to be really warm.
30 min?! Holy crap, try sticking a piece of cardboard inbetween the outside and the radiator and it'll heat up faster. Try a bit of brake boosting on the highway, that usually helps, hahah. My 03 wrx heats up in 5 min driving it in -20 degrees with a 5-8 min warmup at idle.
My 01 2.5RS warmed up pretty quick (10-15) minutes when it had an auto tranny. Now that it's a manual, it takes about twice as long to reach temp when its below zero. Of course, these time are with my heater on full hot with the fan on 2 of 4. If its still cold after 1/2 an hour, that's probably something wrong. But if its just not as hot as it is after driving it a bit, I think that's within the realm of normal. Also, is your heater on when your warming it up? That will of course make it take longer to warm up
Won't really help, since the coolant doesn't start circulating until the motor warms up some anyway. Mine takes about 10 minutes driving to start warming up if i forgot to plug in the block heater. Warm by the second stoplight if i don't forget.
You said it. That'd suck! I give the car about 30 seconds to "warm up" then start driving and about 5 minutes later the blower kicks in and starts blowing warm/hot air. I can't imagine waiting that long...
