A good friend of mine is lookin at getting into a WRX. He is a go big or go home kinda guy.

He was thinking like 500 to 600 hp. (which I would imagine means a built motor)

As far as block casting is there any difference in the NA and Turbo Models?

What internals would have to be replace to keep it reliable(ish)?

One last thing worth doing a stroker kit to replace internals?

    You're asking the wrong questions.

"He was thinking 500 to 600hp"
    What is his budget?
    How mechanically inclined is he?
Get ready to spend spend spend, as 500hp in Subaru cars isn't something that you just bolt on and go. Your parts get more exotic and specialized.
And can he diagnose high level problems with a vehicle? Because you will work on the car about 3x as much as you normally would. And you will be the one servicing it. Or you'll be paying out the ass for a performance shop to do it. Either way, be ready when those expensive parts start to wear out (and they will) because you will need to replace those.

"As far as block casting is there any difference in the NA and Turbo Models?"
Depends on what model we are talking about.
All N/A motors are open deck
EJ257 and EJ207 motors are semi-closed (they have support braces around the cylinder)
EJ205 US WRX motors are all open deck.
EJ22 turbo motors from 91-94 Legacy Turbo models were closed deck.
They are all the same pot metal castings for newer motors, the older ones varied in their densities.

"What internals would have to be replaced to keep it reliable"
    All of them.

"One last thing worht doing a stroker kit to replace internals?"
Your friend needs to ask himself this question. You need a goal for your build. And "I want 500hp" is NOT a goal. If you don't have a purpose for your build, then you are simply throwing expensive metal objects at your project.

If your friend isn't mechanically inclined, and doesn't know what his purpose for his car is, and doesn't have infinite amounts of free money, he should probably go a different route. If he just wants 500hp to say he has it, he should just go grab a late model Mustang and boost the piss out of it. It costs much less, parts are cheaper and more abundant. And it will likely tolerate that level of abuse for much longer.

There are a million things to consider when "building a 500hp car"

You need to know what sort of driving is it going to be doing?
    Street, strip, road track, auto-x?
If built for strip, road track or auto-x, what class?
Where do you want your power band? Drag racers don't care as much about lag as a road race driver does
What is your budget? You have to know how much you can spend before you start otherwise it's just a very expensive paper weight for long periods of time
What model year is he going to use?
Where does he plan to source the engine? If the answer is "JDMEXPORTENGINEIMPORTSJDMENGINECORP" whatever the hell, then forget it. Those places are a scam and a half.
What supporting mods will be needed for this 500hp engine? Did you think you were going to run stock brakes? LOL. Transmission? The Subaru 5-speeds are pretty reliable, but they wont tolerate 500whp out of the box. If you are drag racing, you may want upgraded axles too. Your suspension will need work, as the stock stuff isn't going to be up to the task of all that acceleration. Wheels and tires? Cooling system? The stock radiator wont appreciate this level of abuse.
What fuels does he plan to run? Is this a daily driver? Track only?
If something goes wrong in the engine bay can he diagnose it? Can he fix it. Does he have a full tool chest?

All I'm saying is, this isn't just slapping an exhaust pipe on the car and a new air filter. There are a million things to consider, and "should I do a stroker" isn't the first question. The question is, "will a stroker kit get me to the goal that i have set for my car?"

thanks for the info. thats the kinda info i was trying to get to, so i can tell him what it is all going to take.
he is capable of doing alot of the work himself. I'm not sure what is end goal.
Money is not to much of a problem the machining and that things along that line he knows poeple thay will do that for him.

I know for myself i would be plent happy with around 350hp.

be ready to spend money that's for sure, and buy lots of tylenol!

other than that, just read up on the build threads even in this forum ;) it will give you a better idea of what you need to do. join NASIOC also, there are quite a few high hp build threads on there.

EG33? Make your job really easy. :p Mild forced induction will give you 500-600hp easy and will give over 300whp NA.
