I wanted to reach out to those that have non-OEM lugs to see what you like and why. I am looking at picking up a set of spline drive (12 x 1.25) lugs, from what I read they are manufactured to help avoid chipping the paint on your wheels. I was going to order some from Wheeldude when I got my new rims, but they were out of locking lugs. Locking lugs are a requirement. The guy at Wheeldude also said they should be conicall seeded. I was looking at the McGard's setup. That is what Wheeldude would have sold me, so I know it will work with my setup. Amazon.com shopping link Anyone feel like educating me on what they have and why? Ok I will give you a lugz shot too.
I had McGards on my 04 a long time ago, the chrome started to get surface rust after one winter. I put Gorilla lugs on my wife's car before this winter started. So far they look Ok.
Good to know. I think the Gorillas are less money too. From their website.... LOL Click Here The Best Chrome Plating In the Industry The best in the industry. Our process includes three layers of nickel and one layer of microporous chrome. The first layer of nickel is for corrosion resistance; the second layer of nickel is for luster and the third nickel layer interacts with the microporous chrome layer to disperse nature’s corrosive action (rust).
Keep in mind that I bought them from subydude back in 04-05, they might use different plating now. I chose to buy the gorilla lugs because of the price, but I pretty much expect them to have some rust by the end of winter.
McGards are fine. Mutekis are nice as well, mine lasted through 3 years without much more than rust on the threads, and that was from the studs themselves. Conical seated means they come to a cone shape where the nut meets the wheel surface. You NEED that since I don't think any wheels that fit Subarus have a flat surface, look in wheel's holes, do they look like a funnel? If yes, then you need conical seat nuts.
Cool, so it looks like the set I found on Amazon isn't a bad way to go. I have been reading threads on NASIOC too, it seems that McGards and Mutekis are the two brands that everyone likes. I don't have my rims yet, they are somewhere between California and Minnesota. The sales guy @ Wheeldude said conical and I am going to put faith in the fact that he knows his stuff. Now the hard part. Gold lugs on gold wheels Black lugs on gold wheels.
I have Muteki knock offs from ebay/oreilys and they work fine but dont seem to stand up to road salt as well as some of the higher end ones. reason i went with them is because they are cheap and a pretty common lug so extra keys are always easy to find.
Get closed ended lug nuts. Get extra keys (available at Discount tire for a couple bucks). Reconsider locking lug nuts. bc 1) If they seize, you'll end up destroying them to remove them II) When you're caught without the key, you're ****ed (i.e. flat tire) c) Considering ^, you probably want to keep the key in the car... essentially defeating the purpose of a security key 4) Related to security, anyone with half a brain can easily remove a locking lug without the key V) Guess how much it sucks when ice freezes (or grime gets built up) in the grooves of the locking lug f) for F locking lug nuts
Good lord don't give him any more stupid ideas, Ben. His retarded stretched tires are going to be bad enough as it is.
No, DMG and gold. It doesn't really matter if he gives me stupid ideas or not. I come up with new ones every few minutes. Thus is the nature of Derek. Just be happy I am keeping the rattle can @ bay for summer. Now your eyes will only burn when I put on my winter wheels.
LOL at the title. I have McGard splines waiting to go on in the spring so can't comment on them yet. Oh and, black on gold.
I have always ran Mcgard lugnuts on my cars and liked the wheels. I also agree with the idea of forgetting "locking" nuts. I have ditched the ones I had on my 240.
