After recently acquring a 01 RS sedan with a wicked noise that's coming from the top end i'm guessing, i removed the timing cover to find metal shavings generally all around the crank/timing belt area. Has anyone ever seen this before and come up with a conclusion as to where the failure occured and for what reason? Sorry if I havent given enough information, plan on digging a little deeper into in tonight. Thanks

A picture would help a ton. Without seeing anything I would guess one of the t-belt idler bearings is toast.

I would also think most likely from one of the idler bearings

There is no way that car would run with that many teeth off, it sometimes takes MANY revolutions of the T-belt to ge the marks to line up perfectly, get a new idler, put it on, and re time it, you'll know right away, when it wont idle.
