Here is my build thread if you want to read up on my Turbo Miata. I have done a lot to this car since I picked it up. Feel free to shoot me any questions via PM. There is a lot of good information out there about the cars. Seeing as how the NA's have been around 26 years, there is a ton of legit threads on how to spend your money. http://www.miataturbo.net/build-threads-57/project-little-cousin-91-na-white-80077/ I just have to throw in the rear end (diff and axels) from the blue car to my white one, add some fuel for E85 on the tune and she will be on the dyno.
The blue car is getting an built LS 86mm turbo swap. My car will be running a built miata engine turbo swap for the first few years. The long term plan is to LS swap it. First I want to help the blue car swap the LS. Then I want to drive the blue car. That will really help me decide if I start building an LS or keep what I have. My current setup is going to be similar power to my old WRX, but faster turbo spool and a fraction of the weight. I have no doubt in my mind that this will be more than enough power to put a smile on my face. I have a lot of seat time on the track a head of me to be able to tame what is currently in the car.
That seems crazy for a miata...when will it be able to hook? 100mph in 6th gear??? What width rear tires?
There are plenty of V8 miatas that exist in this world. They only add about 50lbs to the overall weight of the car vs a stock block. So balance is still near 50/50. Sure, you can't mash the gas... but isn't that true with most cars when you get into the 500WHP - 800WHP range? Throttle control goes a long ways. There are quite a few V8 track miatas with build threads and videos out there. I know the owner is not concerned one bit. He knows what he is doing when it comes to cars. I know Flyin' Miata has a few videos and write ups on their builds. I think the Drive Channel also did a video on a V8. Either way, it has been done way more than you would think. If hooking up was a huge issue, there wouldn't be so many driven/tracked examples out there. But yes. He is insane to push what he is going to push in that car.
Well yes I have seen lots of just NA V8 miatas but an 86mm turbo is no joke. Also, I know an NA LS engine is pretty light and might add just 50 lbs but I would imagine that 86mm turbo alone weighs 50lbs! lol Not to mention the intercooler and all the plumbing. There is no way the balance is 50:50 in the blue car when its finished. I know traction is an issue with any car with lots of power but the miata is so light and putting more weight on the front tires makes traction even harder. How wide of tires can you even fit on a miata? The big hp rwd cars (supras, mustangs, corvettes, etc) all can easily fit HUUUUUGE tires out back and have significantly longer wheelbases. Dont get me wrong, I think its going to be badass but I just see a lot of potential issues going that big in such a little car.
http://www.fast-turbo.com/precision-pt-8685-gen-2-cea-1400-hp-ball-bearing/ 65lbs just the turbo...and 1400hp rating...even tubbed out drag cars with slicks have a hard time putting that much power down on a prepared track surface covered in glue. This thing is going to be spin city. Very fun I imagine but unless you are starting from a 100mph roll it will never be able to use a fraction of that power.
Yeah, drag racing.... not my cup of tea. IMHO - not what a car like the Miata should be used for either.... but what do I know. There are tons of Youtube videos out there with these on the track. Here are a few. /Tuned Exocet Miata by Flyin' Miata We agree on the weight that it won't be 50/50. That is why I said near 50/50. There is 14+ years of work on that blue car. It is far from stock weight. That car has seen lots of changes over the years. I guess my point was more about keeping it simiar to a stock miata 50/50 weight.
Well. Damn you all. I just had to click on the miata thread. Had to poke my head in for a look see. Gander at the miata opinions. Now I sit here questioning every choice that I have made in my life thus far and where I could've possibly gone wrong to end up here: Miata-less. I really want one of these adorable little ****s now thanks to you guys.
I have a friend selling one. It's in good shape for a bangaround track toy. Also, you're right to doubt yourself. I'm in the same boat.
I love mine, she takes it all day! Doing my first autox with her this weekend. Still basically stock but just did a new muffler, clutch/flywheel, brakes, and some other general maintenance. Mike
Nice! I'll be out there both days. Come say hi Felipe This is my '99 sport I picked up in AZ 3 weeks ago.
I think I would look at this option before an LS conversion. Not that I am against huge amounts of horsepower in a tiny little chassis, but this seems a lot cleaner and easier. I think it would be as much fun to drive. http://www.superfastmiatas.com/JV6 Miata Kit.html
Love the two-tone interior in that particular edition. I'd recommend replacing the wheels, though, as those are the heaviest stock wheels put on the NB. They are event heavier than the 17s on the MSM.
Looks nice! mine is all stock for now but I'm curious to see how it compares to some modified ones. Which class are you running in? Mike
I agree, one of the best color combos out there. I was lucky to find one! There's so much I want to do to to the car. Wheels will definitely be happening at some point in the future. Mike
