I haven't timed too many engines, but I was hoping I hadn't screwed up something so simple. Of course, if it's not this, it's probably some other stupid thing I screwed up along the way. I do occasionally overlook the obvious.

So I bought new manifold gaskets so I could refit the manifold to be 100% sure it was leak free. After pulling it off I noticed that the valves in cylinder 4 looked moist/oily. I'm wondering if this is a concern?

Yeah, carb cleaner, razor blades, rags, etc. I'll make it pretty. I just want to be sure there isn't a valve issue before I put the manifold back on. I have had this nagging worry despite the good compression tests since the timing was off.

Yes, I got between 10 and 15% loss on an entirely cold engine.

Just listened to your video. Have you drained the oil and inspected it for bearing material?

No, I just put this motor in, because my old one lost a bearing. I can turn this motor over by hand without any real resistance though. It came directly from Psychorunner's car, which was supposedly in good running condition when he pulled it.

I gave you my diagnoses, inspect the oil. The video sounds like rod knock. You can spin them easily because there are no bearings left.

True enough. even with a 70K BTU heater I'd rather wait until the temp warms up to start wrenching again.

I got that and it's next on my list of things to do. I am still wondering about the exhaust valves though. I don't want to put the exhaust manifolds back on until I have some idea if the look of those exhaust valves is an issue or not. I'm trying to do things one step at a time so there is no confusion about potential problems.
