If i actually have some time or some decent weather i will take my new camera out. Poor t1i sits in its bag and hasnt gotten used yet
^ how does that work? The moment my XSi showed up at the door I was already taking pics with it. I think I took a picture of everything in the house ;-)
after seeing the pic from above i decided to try it the other night with my new canon sx20is...decided to not go for a dslr now until i can get good with this one , anyway , no editing , no adjustments made to settings , no tripod , just 20x zoom....... i am just starting , but once i better understand the manual i hope to start learning and getting the most out of this camara , then i will move onto a better camara
that was a smart move getting a easy camera to learn comp on. i see a lot of people jump into slr's and get frusterated because their photos arent great because of the money they spent. the camera is a tool. id pick up a book on composition. i like your moon shot! here is the one i took yesterday night
I got an sx1is for christmas, basically in the same boat as you. I wanted more than our tiny point an shoot but not ready for slr yet. I'm only a little way into the manual, definitely a lot of new settings to get used to. But in full Auto it does take nice pics so far. I also wanted something with HD video just for small clips. Canon sx series seems to fit the bill. Here's a few from the last snowfall.
^ I have an SX10IS as well, love it! Awesome camera if ur not ready for a dslr (like me), I've found that takes a lot of work out of taking good pics and it does most of what they slr's do, just w/o having the conveinance for changing lenses. Great pics guys, any other amatures out there that wanna practice takin shots LMK!
/\ /\ /\ /\ /\REALLY nice work! /\ /\ /\ /\ /\ im trying so hard to get to the zoo! once again REALLY nice shots. what lens is that on what body? Here are a few shots i have from a new thing im doing this winter. my family owns a TON of vintage cameras. video and film slr cameras. im taking them each one by one and featuring them as subjects. i think it would be kinda cool to show off how they used to look. they got so much use back in the day that they have kinda been putt out to stud. each is almost a work of art. so amazing to hold and so cool to snap with. (thats for another day) this first one is a Zeiss Ikon Contaflex. German made and very solid cameras! they were used heavily during the first and second world war and are known for their optics. many vintage collectors swear by them. this one is still functional but needs some intense cleaning. i want to use it so bad! teaser photos:
Thanks Zoo's are cool, it was my first time shooting in one. 20d body with an el cheapo 100-300 canon glass, which closes down to 5.6 pretty much right away which sucks in all those dark corners of the zoo . I was pretty jealous of all people walking around with L lenses out there Next time i'll rent one out if i dont buy one before. Those little vintage rangefinders are uber cool, i'd rock one if i had one. Or a new leica M9 if i had the money I'd also love to walk around with one of those new micro four thirds, like olympus pen or lumix gf1. So much better for walkaround photography than lugging around big slr's. Oh so many good toys around
i dont dare use these vintage cameras because im trying to keep them in condition so the day i can sell them for money i get a pretty penny. the Zeiss Ikon is my favorite one in the house. just the way it feels in your hands makes you think there is something very special about the camera. im planning on a zoo trip here soon so i can try out the new zoom lens i got a couple weeks ago. its just a bit of a drive and they close at 4pm so i need to get out of bed earlier. its hard in the winter lol. all i want to do is sleep.
i hit the zoo too!!!! it was so fun. i felt like a little kid again. a little kid with a slr haha. all i can say is i hate what snow does to my whitebalance http://www.flickr.com/photos/holsterphotography
Very nice! I love big cats I wonder if the snow simply makes your pictures underexposed and the snow looks gray. That's what usually happens at least, adding between +1 and +2 stops of compensation fixes that right up. Im usually lazy to do that, so i just adjust exposure in postprocessing.
Mike, I back tracked a couple of pages and took a look at some of your work. Let me say that each and every one is absolutely stunning. Keep up the good work, man!
well the snow that day turned every photo kinda blue.... i had to edit the whitebalance after. it wasnt too bright out either so i had to use F4 to try freeze action and stop camera shake at 200mm. it worked after editing. i had to lighten them all up a tad. but thats easy when your shooting RAW everytime Thanks Eric. visit this link to see the majority of my work. http://www.flickr.com/photos/holsterphotography
I've been so lazy to edit my zoo shots. I was there in October and I'm just getting to them, here's some more Also i would just like to add, it sucks shooting through a fence, there was a gorgeous pitch black jaguar and i couldn't get one nice shot.. a crowd of people and his running around wasn't helping the situation either
haha booty shot! yeah fences suck a lot but if you can get close enough to them with the widest aperture you can muster, they seem to fade away most of the time. i really hate Glass windows...... dont even get me started on how much i dislike those.
^ you should be able to pull them up in photoshop if your version allows it. I had to upgrade to CS3 for it to allow me to use my XSi RAWs. I Still havent tried it yet, I am stuck in the JPG days I guess.
I have old Photoshop 6.0 because it was free, so it won't work. What does a new(er) version of pshop cost, generally?
For any camera brand user, I would highly recommend Adobe Lightroom if you're on PC or Apple Aperture if you have a Mac for photo (RAW and other formats) post processing and management. Photoshop is a bit too heavy for photo editing and those applications are designed to do just that. Makes it really easy and fun. They also take care of managing/sorting/storing of images and in a pretty awesome way (at least when it comes to Aperture). There are a lot of different plug-ins available for those as well(like noise ninja, etc) and if you really need photoshop and its tools for some images, you can export those into it. My 0.02
i got a program that came on a CD with my canon XTi called "Digital Photo Professional". it lets me do tweaking of things like Brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpness, noise reduction, exposure, crop, whitebalance and some other things. it can view and edit RAW images. the editing is small but its how i always convert my images to Jpeg format after i have them looking clean. i dont really edit much so its usually a quick tweak to get it looking as sharp as i can and edit my whitebalance. idk if Nikon gives you anyting similar when you buy their cameras. idk either if canon does with anything other than the XTi.
that candle photo is really cool! i just wish it was sharper. looks like you might have been too close for your lens to focus on im just guessing. Photobucket is what i use for posting images i didnt take. like car photos and funny images i like to share. but flickr is where its at. its also a community flickr FTMFW! i love everything about flickr. i spend more time on that site than i should probably admit. im addicted. the IQ is awesome and its very organized. get one! add me as a contact haha. free flickr = only 100mb of photos each month max. thats more than enough if you upload resized images. i dont really size mine so i always run out of room each month. Pro acounts are only like $24 a year. im getting one next month. i cant wait for unlimited uploads and more share size options.
Snapped a couple yesterday after getting my new sigma 10-20mm, it was freezing so i didnt worry about composition too much
^ ugh!!!! im looking at a tokina 11-16 2.8. its a fast lens and im sure id be on my camera more than any other lens. nice shot of juut. i like it! do you have a flickr?
2.8 would be nice, this sigma is a bit slower 4/5.6, i primarily will use it outdoors though, so it wont be a huge issue for me. I've done some reading on wide angles for canons and for me it was between canon 10-22 and this sigma 10-20, people say good things about both and with canon being almost twice the price of the sigma i chose the latter. I like it so far, the build is very solid as well. www.flickr.com/photos/pixeltronica/
Yeah, stock lens lol Kind of decided to keep the XS and start investing in the lense... Hopefully we can replace this guy with a nice 60mm macro or 28mm wide angle... Also, in camera related news, T2i info was released today.
the kit lens should be completely fine for shooting. make sure to stop down the aperture for sharper images. i still have my kit lens. as long as i have a good enough exposre (sometimes a tripod is needed to steady the shake) i get great IQ. that being said. investing in nice glass will for sure help with IQ but wont single handedly make your shots better. it makes them easier. dont cheap out on glass.
I've been on a road trip for the past week and a half and I still haven't had any time to do photography. Pretty lame. But, these are some great shots guys. Big fan of the first shot in the Wolf Moon series.
Well after trying the SX1 for a while I decided to return it. I just felt I couldn't get crisp images, especially in anything not in ideal light. Also I found the manual focus was a pain to use. I exchanged it and paid the extra $$ for a T1i and I'm happy I did. So far even with the kit 18-55mm lens the clarity is a lot better. Now I just have a lot to learn.
