This morning while driving to work I captured a guy spin out in front of me on dash camera. Sent the video to Kare 11 and they posted it to their Facebook page. Link: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10158270745455457 The comments make me laugh. Could I have done anything differently?
Luckily he was on the brakes when you passed him! I was in a similar situation last year on the curve from westbound crosstown to northbound 35w. The guy spun a few times just like in your video, but once he corrected the spin, and right as I was about to do what you did and pass, he kept traveling across all lanes of traffic. Twas a close one
I94 west in Brooklyn Center. The part of I94 where you can go east onto 694 or continue west on 94. I was going west
It was quite icy out this morning. But I would say you did everything right. People always drive too fast with tires they shouldn't have for winter. Good news is that the Vibe pictured didn't seem to get hurt, or do too much damage to their vehicle.
Laughing at the comments on the facebook vid. So many people complaining about a Subaru driver that can handle and maintain a higher speed than them. I definitely do not go 30mph on the freeway in those conditions, nor will I ever in my AWD car with snow tires unless traffic prohibits me from going faster. Traffic and stupid drivers = my #1 cause of stress in life.
To be fair, all those people commenting that you were going too fast are probably the same ones who do 10MPH on the freeway during the first snow of the year that barely even covers the ground in white. Apparently last winter was too long ago for them to remember how to drive in "snow." And probably the same people who would have panicked in your situation, slammed on the brakes and T-boned the vibe/matrix. Nothing you did looked out of control or endangered anyone else. Therefore you were going an appropriate speed.
This! "Proper speed" is based off of the fact that you can keep the car in control at all times...which you did. I thought everything looked legit (with exception of the comments) lol
Most people forget how to drive in the snow it seems. Every year. Sometimes multiple times in the same winter. So I totally agree with you there. The old vibe/matrix is a pretty light car, we had an 08 before the wife got her Prius. It tended to blow around on the road more so that could have contributed to it spinning out. Though I'd lean towards not good tires as well. Positive thing is it looks like no one was hurt.
Probably no season tires. Just based on stats alone. If we're gonna go full reddit/csi here, it looks like they reacted to the car on the shoulder. Moved left, saw they were cutting close to the icy shoulder, jerked the wheel back right, and lost it... smooth inputs people.... smooth inputs. Can't go jerking it around all willy nilly and not expect a mess in your lap... wait, what?
Did you ever see the ad campaign South Dakota put together a few years ago about winter driving? Something like Don't Jerk And Drive. I believe. Didn't take long for them to realize it was a terrible idea.
