Alright guys. We have a cracked block in the 99 leg sus, so instead of dealing with buying a new leg motor, we were thinking about maybe swapping in a wrx motor since the bill would be about the same at the end of the day.

The car is a auto and we want to keep it that way. Would the legacy tranny bolt up to a wrx turbo motor 2.0 or 2.5? How much do long blocks go for and where can I find one? I'm really just looking for the best option and opinions from you guys as to what we should do. Doesn't have to be the wrx motor, but that is our first choice. We just know we want to keep the stock auto tranny.

    Help me out guys

tranny will bolt up fine, i guess i am not sure what you plan to do here....full swap? or just blocks and retain the stock harness and everything

Longblock? I don't know anything about Subaru swaps. That's why I'm asking. What can we use in place of the 2.5 leg longblock that will bolt up the the tranny

you can swap the blocks out pretty easy, but if you wanted to have the WRX complete engine, turbo set up and all it would take more

^ any ej motor will bolt up. but there is no way that the cost is the same between a wrx swap and just putting another 2.5 in there. a decently low milage 2.5 can be found for well under a grand. your talking several thousand for a wrx motor/turbo/x-member/ecu/wiring

    wiring harness and merge
    hoses
misc. little parts all over the place
all sorts of fun stuff to deal with...where as the blocks would basically be take out, tear down and replace.

Ok so what is the best plan here? Can't it just be an easy bolt up with some wires here and there?! haha

So should we just replace the block and the head gaskets and move on or what? I need some prices here, cause I'm not spending my money

well you could get a "low millage" 2.5, 2.0, 2.2 block and then put all the stock parts back on it basically with some new headgaskets and call it good. personally, i would replace most of the accessories while you are at it.

Here is a link to someone who did this with a 2000 Legacy GT. They put in a 2003 WRX engine and drivetrain. curly is right about it being a MAJOR undertaking. You will have to get an account over at awdpirates.net to be able to see the link.

I read that, but I want to go to an auto wrx motor, not switch to a manual. How much (estimated) would it be to swap the just the longblock?

Why WRX 2.0 or 2.5 it if the person driving doesn't care... doesn't the NA 2.5 get better gas millage?

    Bull.

I did my basic wrx swap for less than $2k. Then I added a bunch of parts and it ended up around $2500 with everything.

    This would be awesome.

Luke: it's my lil bros car. His mom is paying for it. She doesn't want to redo the stock 2.5, so I'm just looking for options. She seems to like the WRX option. Once she makes a decision, she doesn't usually change it. Women!

Don't know who's doing the work. We're looking to hire. So apply in PM if you're interested.

Well I don't mind paying someone who knows what they're doing to do it. That's why I'm asking if someone from the forum would be able to do it. We will pay. I just don't know a whole lot about subaru motors and swapping and such.
I suppose I can talk to some shops, I just wasn't really willing to pay that much to get this done

You are correct, I did it myself. My comment was just that it doesn't have to cost $5000 for a turbo engine swap.

If you are going to pay a shop to do it you can count on $4-5k out the door. There is a lot of labor involved in a swap, more than 40 man hours counting everything. 40 hours x $60 per hour = $2400 in just the labor costs.

the bigist hassle with the swap is the wiring.

Give Chux a call for the wiring.
