After driving my brothers 325xi with muffler delete, I want a 5 spd and a more aggressive exhaust. Obviously only one of things is going to happen. I've heard that a muffler delete works pretty well, I don't want something too loud or with much drone. What can you guys recommend on the cheap (can't justify headers, it's purpose is road tripping and dd). Also a shout out to Chris at flawless front ends, had him tint my car and the work is fantastic and looks great! Just installed an Sti rear sway bar as well and can see why everyone recommends it, an Sti must be a dream to drive if that single part makes it so much better.
    Thanks, got off topic haha

If you don't want it to be too loud or drone you should probably get a quality catback instead of a muffler delete. Especially on a NA without the turbo in the way of the exhaust it will be pretty raspy and loud as hell without the muffler.

You dont want to delete the muffler and expect it to be good for road tripping. Delete the resonator if you're set on modding the stock exhaust.

Thanks for the replies, when you say quality Catback is there one you can recommend? I know there is an spt Catback for $300 or so but I cant find it on oem parts sites. I think only one or two year models had the single tailpipe on the wrx. Im not too ambitious for the setup, I just really hate the stupid exhaust tips that try to make it look bigger (you can always see the actual pipe inside of it...). What will cutting out the resonator make it sound like?

I ran a muffler delete on my 2009 WRX hatch for a year. It wasn't loud, didn't drone and I did not have any issues.
I had a muffler shop create a replacement axle back pipe that connected to the stock pipe and exited the stock location with a tip on the end. The result was a completely factory looking, and removable setup.
Do a little research, I still have the setup, if it fits your car shoot me a pm.

From what I understand my midpipe is significantly narrower and maybe a bit longer. Catback wrx apparently works though. Thanks

    A couple things,

Also an aftermarket turbo catback is going to be really loud on an NA because it doesn't have a turbo to quiet the exhaust down.

Cutting the resonator out or gutting the muffler is an option. Another option is to get a stock wrx or Sti exhaust. It will be a cheaper option than an aftermarket cat back and will be more reasonable sounding.

You can get a cat back fairly cheap, eBay or Amazon, a MagnaFlow works nice but you have to get it welded in. It sounds great, real low throughty sound not loud. I had one for awhile but it wasn't loud enough for me.

There must be a crapload of people on this board who have a stock wrx/sti catback lying in their garage, put a wanted thread in the FS forum and see if anyone will bite for $50 :)

Muffler delete won't work on a NA!

Is this for a sedan or hatch?

I've got the catback from a 2011 hatch that I'd love to get rid of.

    It's an 08 hatch, doesn't the '11 wrx/sti have dual exhaust?
From what I've read it is a direct bolt on, except for possibly needing long hangers for the muffler. I'm just trying to find a sound clip to see if its a big enough difference. One pet peeve of mine is the stupid exhaust tip (on my car) that tries to make it look bigger/nicer. Doesn't fool anyone. Yea I'm interested, it'll also set me up for getting UEL at some point (I did find many sound clips, they didn't seem to increase noise, just that awesome rumble).
Thanks for all of the help guys, saw a 2010 wrx at Walser and was thinking about it.... just too much $$$

I have an SPT on my 08 N/A sedan. It drones, it's obnoxious, it's loud. It's a love/hate situation. To be honest I would go a custom route or just leave it alone.

I think I'll just leave it alone, my previous car was a v6 and I can't get over how most of the sound clips sound 'ricey'. Think I'll spend that money on rokblokz mudflaps, the oem 'splashguards' are **** during the winter.

I have my n/a legacy with the nameless axle back deletes, it isn't bad, even less if your cats are still in it.

So the video that turned me away from the oem wrx exhaust was actually the spt version, which is known to be way to big for the n/a impreza. My plan is to bolt up a used wrx oem exhaust (once I find one) and be happy with it until next summer when I plan to get rallisport headers. At that point if the oem exhaust isn't good enough for the headers I'll throw the obx Catback exhaust system on it.
    Sounds awesome
