So for the past month every time I start my car it smells like a gas can... Then tonight on my way to work my car randomly just turned off when I was sitting at a stop light. It started back up but this stuff sure isn't normal... My transmision is on its way out the door... I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas of what I need to do/look at. Thanks ps I am new to the car world so dumb it down for me... Car is an auto 96 impreza OB
possibly a few bad injectors or maybe a gas line leak?? check your all of your gas lines and even your fuel pump. its located under the bottom of your backseats. or at least mine is and i drive a 98 legacy it should be the same
You gotta start somewhere We were .. all n00bs once ... shocking, i know, especially around here
So when it dies, does it just kill, or does it try to keep running then kinda just sputter out. I would just check out all your fuel lines around the filter and check your injectors. If you can smell gas, you should be able to see it. Something is bound to be wet. Russ
^when it dies it just kills I don't know if this has anything to do with anything but every time i turn the car on the at oil temp light flashes on and off for about a min then stops. -could this just be a fuse problem?
^^ That would probably be a code it's throwing, or trying to tell you something is wrong. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83901
maybe the dying. is due to a broken maf. mafs can be a real PITA if you leave them on your car long enough when they are broken.
no check engine light.. -the exhaust also smells highly of gas and sometimes runs a light bluecolor..... i keep remembering things that are wrong:hsugh: -Thanks everyone for the ideas/ info....I'm all ears always --im off to buy a manual for my car... and i need a garage spot to open up in my garage... ~cough cough(max) cough cough~
Light blue smoke would mean burning oil, but I imagine Max would have mentioned that already. I'd turn the key to on and let the fuel pump prime to get some pressure in the lines and rails. You should be able to track down a leak then, just don't use a lighter Does the fuel smell come from under the hood or from the exhaust?
If your AT light is flashing, it's probably due to the fact that it has a code stored in it from a previous time when it stalled. If you were moving at all when it happened, it's probably a speed sensor code.
Not really, often you can have a leak that is slow enough that the gas vaporizes as quickly as it leaks out. I just replaced a fuel pump seal on my Nissan that was exactly like that. Likewise, on my WRX I had the fuel line recall done and you could definitely smell the fuel leaking, but even knowing where it was happening, you couldn't see any liquid fuel. I seem to recall there being some rubber fuel lines (they may have just been a rubber jacket over steel though in the cabin of Amy's Legacy when it was gutted (well, still are), a leak there would probably be a really bad thing though. If it smells strongly in the cabin and not so much under the hood, I'd look at any seals on the fuel tank, like where the pump goes in, and where the filler neck attaches, etc. If things like that have a leak, when the car is sitting in the sun and warms up, the vapors in the tank will expand and find their way out and into the cabin.
well later this week when i get my wheels back from max (they look sexy on the leggy by the way) i can help take gander or you can come by jiffy lube and we can take a look at the lines under your car...whatever works...if you need my # lemme know otherwise i'll be out there thurs or fri...p.s. is there any beer left in those kegs? by the way this is Evan with the white bugeye if you didn't know
