Your tranny is dying. 5th gear popping out is common as the tranny gets older. Time for a rebuild or tranny replacement. You have a handful to choose from. Legacy 2.5GT 5spds or Forester 5spds. Go back to a 2.5RS tranny and you're not gonna find one that's been driven nice. The Forester and Legacy tranny I specified are the same as the 2.5RS.

If you search on Nasioc, there's a whole host of threads covering this topic. Infortunately answers vary just as much from a nut loosening and backing off to a bent clutch fork to worn syncros to more serious tranny problems. It's tough to say specifically though.

Before you condemn it, try some different fluid, I used to run just straight GM syncromesh, I had it in there for near 100K miles, it solved my grind problem almost 100%, the ONLY time it would come back was when the trans was super hot and I would do a REALLY fast 1-2 shift.

Poor tranny. I'm surprised it's not dead now. Syncromesh is NOT GL-5 rated. It was even lab tested in Scotty's mix to break down and become worthless in under 20k miles. The oil is great in the fact that it was designed specifically for excellent syncro function, but it was not designed to last in our transmissions. The additive package just gets chewed apart quickly, and the oil becomes worthless.

I would suggest a change in oil too but not for this case. If there was simply a gear grinding issue or issue with cold weather driving, I'd be all over the switch to X oil arguement, but this is different.

My trans still works fine, no howling, nothing. That doesnt mean its the right thing to do though.
